Women's Soccer Handed First NAC Defeat at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Me. (October 9, 2021) - The SUNY Delhi women's soccer team suffered their second straight shutout defeat with a 2-0 decision at Maine Maritime in NAC play Saturday afternoon. It marked the opening game of the Broncos' NAC Maine road trip, as they look to break even with a win at Thomas at 12 noon. Delhi remains in a lucrative spot atop the NAC West at 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the NAC. MMA remains undefeated with a 6-0 conference ledger.

Senior goalie Rachael Scoones tallied 11 saves on an afternoon where the Mariners led 16-5 in shots and 13-5 in shots on goal. MMA broke through with the opening score in the 34th minute when Kelsey Burns buried a ball off an assist from MacKenzie Carter for a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Mariners padded their lead early in the second half when Carter and Bern reversed roles to give Carter the score from a Bern assist in the 49th minute. 

Head coach Zach Ward's team remains two games ahead in the NAC West standings as of Saturday afternoon. Following Sunday's match with the Terriers, Delhi has three more regular-season matches, including two NAC West matchups. They head to NAC West-foe SUNY Poly Saturday, Oct. 16 for a 12 noon start time, followed by a non-conference road match at Bard Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. and finally home versus SUNY Canton to conclude the regular season Oct. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
