DELHI, N.Y. (May 27, 2021) – SUNY Delhi Athletics Director Bob Backus has announced EJ Reutemann as the college's next Men's Soccer Head Coach. Reutemann is no stranger to the New York State soccer scene, growing up in Clifton Park near Albany-Schenectady and a longtime stint as both a student-athlete and coach at SUNY Cortland. His most recent assignments included a run as assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan and defending NCAA Division III national champion Tufts.
"On behalf of the Broncos we want to welcome Coach Reutemann to SUNY Delhi," said Backus. "As SUNY Delhi is set to begin full NCAA membership in September of 2021, we are anxious to see our men's soccer program continue to develop under Coach Reutemann's leadership and guidance as we compete in the competitive North Atlantic Conference."
Reutemann comes to SUNY Delhi at an exciting time, as the college is set to complete its transition for full-time NCAA Division III membership this fall. He inherits a program that has remained steady over the course of this transition, combining for 54 wins since starting four-year athletics in 2015 and reaching the North Atlantic Conference Tournament in their first year in the conference in 2019.
About EJ:
"I am proud and excited to have been selected as the Head Men's Soccer Coach at SUNY Delhi and would like to express my sincere appreciation to Director of Athletics Bob Backus, the administration, members of the coaching staff and student-athletes who served on the search committee. I meet this opportunity with energy and enthusiasm for what lies ahead here at SUNY Delhi. The newly designated full-time membership with the NCAA to operate and brand as a Division III school makes this an extremely appealing time to be a Bronco. I am grateful for the opportunity and anxious to begin working with our current and future student-athletes, alumni and supporters to build a leading program"
Reutemann comes to Delhi after serving on the coaching staff at defending national champion Tufts University during the challenging 2020-21 academic year affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He previously had a stint at Virginia Wesleyan after an eight-year run with his alma mater SUNY Cortland. A four-year student-athlete for the Red Dragons majoring in Sports Management, Reutemann joined the coaching staff upon graduating. He spent his first five years as Assistant Coach, followed by his last three as Associate Head Coach. Reutemann earned his Master's from Cortland in Sports Management in 2017.
He was part of a coaching staff at SUNY Cortland that compiled a 108-43-11 overall record over eight years, making the postseason each of those seasons and ranking in the top 25 among all NCAA Division III. The program won the 2016 SUNYAC championship in a year where the Red Dragons set the school record for wins with 19 and shutouts with 14. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Reutemann took part in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes, as well as teaching classes in health-related fitness, soccer and tactical skills components.
