Barrow Break 50 in Triple Jump, Watson Breaks Vault Mark Again!

The SUNY Delhi Track and Field team had another successful weekend at the University of Albany Spring Classic.  The meet brought many division I programs together to test the Broncos against some of the best atheltes in the northeast.  The result was a number of top performances in school history!

The biggest highlight came from Junior Keimon Barrow who won the meet in the triple jump.  After a number of good jumps that just didn't quite put everything together, Barrow covered 15.28 meters (50' 1.75") with a wind legal jump on his final attempt.  The jumpe marks the first time an athlete has broken the 50 foot mark outdoors and added to his own school record established last year.  It also marks his second best jump all-time behind his 15.33m (50' 3.5") effort indoors last winter.

Also winning an event was sophomore Walter Briggs.  Briggs was matched against some top competition in the 400 meter hurdles.  At the 200 meter mark, he was even with three other competitors.  By the 300 meter mark, there was just one University of Albany runner still with him. He then exploded away from everyone over the last 100 meters to win the event by over three seconds with an all-time best of 53.20 seconds.  This time was just 0.06 off the school record and 0.09 off the meet record.  Both Barrow and Briggs will compete this Friday in the prestigous Penn Relays in the high jump and 400 hurdles respectively.

The other top three finish for the Broncos came from Freshman Doug Williams.  Williams had to run out of lane eight in the slow heat of the 200 meters.  He never saw a competitor as he blazed away from the field and hit the finish line in a wind legal 21.69 seconds.  That performance broke him in for third overall in the meet.  Williams also jumped 7.09m (23' 3.25") in the long jump with a legal wind just one week after he broke the school record in that event.  7.09m was the school record prior to last week giving Williams the number one and two jumps in school history, tied at number two with teammate Keimon Barrow and SUNY Delhi Hall of Famer Jon Fagan.

Leading the women's team once again was freshman Kelcey Watson.  Watson came from from eight week off due to injury last week to break the school record in the outdoor pole vault in her first outdoor meet.  This week she added a little more to that record with a clearance of 3.40m (11' 1.75"), good for second place overall.  On her second attempt at 3.55m, which would have been an all-time best indoors or out, Watson cleared the bar and brushed her hand across the top just wiggling the bar enough to fall.  However, the jump builds confidence that she can add more to the mark before the season ends.

Other new personal bests were turned in by Tyler O'Bryant in the 100 meters (10.87), Samantha St. Denis in the 400 meters (1:05.39), Rainey Cerqua in the 800 meters (2:47.03), Elise McIntyre in the 800 meters (2:52.72), Scott Downing in the 1500 meters (4:09.46), Nick Arnecke in the 1500 meters (4:18.82), and Kobie Lane in the 5000 meters (15:25.16).

The Broncos will be attending the Ithaca College Weekday Meet on Tuesday, the Penn Relays on Friday and then hosting the first annual USCAA National Invitational on campus Saturday in a busy coming week!
