Broncos Sweep Multiple Events, Messina Breaks Record Again

Houghton, NY - The Delhi men's and women's track and field team traveled to Houghton University for the Highlander Invitational.  The Broncos swept top spots in multiple men's events while Kitty Messina broke the school record in the weight throw for the second week in a row.

The first event the Broncos swept was the men's 60-meter hurdles.  Leading the way was Senior Joey Ciufo with a time of 8.79 seconds.  Taking the next two spots across the finish line were Jamar Matthew (9.00) and Jack Mooney (9.56).  Delhi also took the top three spots in the men's long jump.  Aidan Steele (6.38 meters), Luke Foster (6.33 meters) and Cristhian Cuevas (6.31 meters) placed 1-2-3 respectively.  Steele also added a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.60 meters.  Senior Joshua Jeffes and freshman Dayzin Lagare took the top two spots in the 200 meters with Jeffes running 22.01 to set a new facility record and Lagare running 22.32 seconds.

Other event wins came from Lagare and James Olson.  Lagare won the 60-meter dash with a 6.98 second clocking while Jeffes placed third in 7.09.  James Olson won the shot put with a toss of 13.48 meters and added a runner-up finish in the weight throw with a mark of 14.68 meters.  Senior John Amenta also had a good day placing second in the 800 meters (2:02.65 and third in the one mile run (4:31.55).  The final top three finish for the Broncos came from the 4x400 meter relay team of Nyere Hill, Cheo Munford, Silas Bashant and Sam Lees, which placed third overall.

Leading the way for the women's team for the second week in a row was senior Kitty Messina.  Messina won the weight throw with a new personal best and school record throw of 14.55 meters.  The toss breaks the record she established last week by another five centimeters.  Messina also placed third in the shot put with a mark of 10.87 meters.  Melinda Reid boosted the team with a second place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.46 meters.  Zoe Rodi finished in fourth place in the 60-meter dash (8.06) and fifth in the 200 meters (27.05).  Freshman Mary Bryant also had a great shwoing in the 800 meters with a new indoor best of 2:30.04 to place fourth individually in that event.

Next up for the team is a return to Utica University for the Blue and Orange Invitational on Saturday the 27th.
