Dean Moves to Within Three of 1K as Broncos Beat Pine Manor in ACAA Play

DELHI, N.Y. (January 14, 2020) – The SUNY Delhi men's basketball team posted a significant 87-58 home victory versus Pine Manor Tuesday night in their ACAA opener, pulling away with another dominating second half to improve to 12-7. Four Broncos finished in double figures in scoring, led by Glenn Butler netting 18 points to go with a game-high six assists.

Payton Dean notched his seventh double-double on the year with ten points and 15 rebounds. He is now three points shy of reaching 1,000 career points. Mavenson Therneus delivered 12 points with eight rebounds, while William Knight came off the bench to make a game-high four 3-pointers for 12 points. Justin Daoud collected eight points with six boards, as Carlos Ithier and Jared Beach each produced nine points off the bench, with Ithier making three triples.

The game began as a toe-to-toe matchup. With the Gators leading, 23-18, halfway through the opening half, the Broncos kicked into another gear with a 15-2 run, forcing PMC into five turnovers in that stretch. The men carried this momentum to a 47-34 halftime lead, then shot a whopping 55.2 percent (16-for-29) in the second half to the Gators' 28.6 (10-for-35) to outscore their guests, 40-24, in the closing frame, stretching their lead to as much as 30 by game's end.

Delhi cashed in 26 Pine Manor turnovers for a 35-17 lead in points off turnovers. The Broncos also held a 16-2 lead in fastbreak points, and outrebounded the Gators, 45-38. The green and gold shot 48.5 percent for the game (33-for-68), while making 10-of-25 threes and 11-of-20 free throws. PMC shot 36.8 percent (25-for-68), converting on 4-of-20 threes and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Dean's career numbers have him at 997 points and 800 rebounds. Knight climbed to 978 points, as Fragale's two points Tuesday puts him at 943 points. Daoud, who reached the 1,000 point milestone at Northern Vermont Johnson on Jan. 6, now has 1,043 points.

With six regular-season games to play, the Broncos have two more ACAA games, hosting Pratt on Feb. 1 and a rematch at Pine Manor on Feb. 15. In the meanwhile, head coach Zack Thomsen's team has back-to-back local road games, starting with SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., followed by Albany Pharmacy Monday at 2:00 p.m. They return home on Wednesday, Jan. 22 versus Clarks Summit at 7:00 p.m.

Delhi's outlook for the postseason includes hosting the ACAA Tournament, with the two semifinals games set for Saturday, Feb. 29 at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and the championship Sunday, Mar. 1 at 12:00 p.m. The Broncos also look to secure a bid for the USCAA Division I National Tournament, which begins Thursday, Mar. 12 at Penn State Fayette. The men were ranked fifth in the latest USCAA Coaches Poll, with the Division I Tournament consisting of eight at-large bids.
