SUNY Delhi Returns To NAC Play, Sweeps VTSU-Johnson

April 19, 2024 --- Oneonta, NY (Cooperstown All-Star Village)


SUNY Delhi softball returned to NAC play with a Friday afternoon doubleheader with VTSU-Johnson.


GAME 1: DELHI (9) vs. VTSU-JOHNSON (8):


HOW IT HAPPENED:

It was a 3 up, 3 down first for Delhi's pitcher Danielle Seymour. The Broncos would load the bases with three straight walks but the Badger's pitcher would work out of the jam to keep the game tied 0-0.

Seymour made quick work in the 2nd; retiring Johnson in order. Sidney Cooper would single in the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second. Cooper would later score on a Carolina Watson single. Smart baserunning by Kayla Beers, who reached on a single, would score from third on a steal attempt by Watson. 4-0 Delhi.

Johnson would answer after a quiet first two innings, cutting into the lead to make it 4-2 Delhi. The Bronco batters continued where they left off in the second with a 3-run third at-bat. Cooper collected with her second inside-the-park home run of the year with a curling hit to the right field corner; plating Cayla Moroni.

The Badger's would threaten Seymour in the fourth inning putting runners on second and third base but couldn't close the gap. Delhi wouldn't extend the lead in their at-bat.

The lead would be 7-4 in favor of the home team going into the bottom of the 5th and that lead would stay at 3.

A sacrifice fly made it 7-5, followed by a 2-run double and the game would be tied at 7-7. Seymour helped herself out on the mound with a sacrifice fly and Delhi retook the lead, 8-7.

The visitors would load the bases but only did enough to tie the game. It was a walk-off in the 7th for the Broncos. Cooper doubled and later scored on Angelina Dickel's infield single.

NOTES:

Seymour (3-8) went the distance for the Broncos.

Cooper was a triple shy of the cycle, scored three runs and knocked in 4 runs.

Camila Fuentes doubled for the Broncos. Beers and Jaden Taylor each records two hits a piece.


GAME 2: DELHI (8) vs. VTSU-JOHNSON (0) --- 5 innings:


HOW IT HAPPENED:

Angelina Dickel went 1, 2, 3 in the circle for the home Broncos to start the game. Score would remain 0-0 moving into the 2nd.

Dickel would strand two runners in scoring position to end the visitors half of second inning. It was a 4-run second frame for Delhi charged on by four consecutive batters reaching base.

Broncos would keep their lead going into their home half of the third. Jaden Taylor would rip a drive to the left field wall for a standup double but would be stuck there.

The team from Vermont wouldn't cut into the lead but the Broncos pushed another 4 runs in to make it 8-0 as the teams moved to the fifth. The home Broncos would retire the Badgers in order to end the game in 5 innings.


NOTES:

Dickel (3-10) threw the full 5 innings for the Broncos. She helped herself out with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Cooper had another strong game at the plate, going 2-2 with 2 runs and a walk. Taylor doubled and singled to have a 4 hit doubleheader.

Kayleigh Allen and Cooper provided strong defense for the Broncos.

The Broncos and Badgers will square off in a matinee doubleheader tomorrow (April 20). Games to begin at 11AM and 1PM.
