Softball Back in Action Against Poly; Beers Collects 100th Career Hit

March 30, 2024 --- Delhi, NY


SUNY Delhi softball was back in action this afternoon, facing off with SUNY Poly in a doubleheader. The visiting Wildcats would take both games on the day: 9-1 and 8-2.

 

GAME 1: DELHI (1) vs. POLY (9) --- 5 innings:


HOW IT HAPPENED:

It was another quiet first inning for both teams but the Wildcats would jump out to a 5-1 lead after two innings. The Broncos were able to use some small ball to score their lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Sidney Cooper would reach base on a hit by pitch and used smart baserunning to end up at third base on a sacrifice bunt. Cooper would score on Danielle Seymour's RBI groundout.

Delhi would get quick outs in the next three innings but the away side would add to their lead with a 2-run, third inning and scoring individual runs in the final two frames.

Delhi would load the bases in the fourth inning and get runners to second and third base in the fifth but were unable to prolong the game.

NOTES:

Angelina Dickel (1-6) started the game and split time with Seymour on the rubber for Delhi.

Cayla Moroni doubled and Carolina Watson added two singles.

The Broncos would leave 8 runners on base.


GAME 2: DEHLI (2) vs. POLY (8):


HOW IT HAPPENED:

After quiet first innings between the two schools in their previous two games, it was a 4-run, first at-bat for the Wildcats. They would use four hits and a walked batter to take the 4-0 lead. The Broncos were able to get a run back in the home half; Cooper doubling home Watson.

The team from Utica extended their advantage with two more runs in the second but their hitters would be quiet until the 7th. Delhi's Kayleigh Allen would collect the second run for the Broncos in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout.

SUNY Poly would make it 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Rally caps were in full view when catcher Jaden Taylor opened the inning with a double and advance to third on a ball 4, wild pitch. A Watson walk would load the bases. A flyout to the Wildcat pitcher would conclude the day for both teams.

NOTES:

Kayla Beers would notch her 100th career hit in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Kayla becomes the first Bronco to accomplish and reach this milestone.

Seymour (1-5), with the start, and Dickel again split pitching duties for the Broncos.

The teams combined for 19 runners left on base.

WHAT'S NEXT:

Delhi softball (2-11, 0-3) have a busy week ahead of them with three doubleheaders on the schedule. If the weather permits, the Broncos will host the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College on April 2. Games scheduled for 3PM and 5PM starts. Delhi will play in Morrisville on Friday and Saturday.
