Basketball Athlete, Coach & Athletic Director

Michael Spisto has been successful in every stage of his SUNY Delhi career, first as an athlete, then as a coach, and ultimately as Athletic Director. He was a starter on the Men’s Basketball Team from 1992 to 1994. Spisto was a two-time All-Region III and All Mountain Valley Conference selection leading both in assists each year.  He was team captain when the Broncos were nationally ranked from 1993 to 1994 and played in two national tournaments, making it to the Final Four in 1994. Spisto coached the Men’s Basketball Team from 1999 to 2001 and 2004 to 2006 to an overall record of 86-31. The team took the 2006 Mountain Valley Conference Championship and Spisto was named the 2006 and 2001 conference and Region III Coach of the Year. He also earned the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Coach of the Year Award in 2001 when the team set a school record with a 28-game winning streak.  That same season the Broncos also earned Mountain Valley Conference and District I Championships advancing to the NJCAA National Championships where they finished fourth.  He coached multiple All- Region and All-Conference Players, sending more than 30 student athletes on to 4 year scholarship schools, including three to Division I. Under Spisto’s leadership as SUNY Delhi Athletic Director from 2006 to 2008 the Athletic Department mission statement and Hall of Fame were established. He served as Director of the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Division III National Tournament and served on several Region III committees including the Conference Expansion Committee as well as the Cross Country, Track and Women’s Basketball committees. Post-Delhi, Spisto coached 8 years in Division I at Rider University, University of Albany and New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is currently Associate Director of The Learning Center at NJIT where he also serves as Eligibility Certification Officer and Academic Advisor for NJIT athletes.  He lives in Staten Island with his wife and 3 children.
