Broncos Come Up Short in Tight Battle with Purchase

DELHI, N.Y. (December 5, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team retook the court Thursday night for a back-and-forth affair versus Purchase. The Broncos broke away briefly with an 11-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Panthers cut the deficit to one point at quarter's end. Purchase then put on a stifling fourth-quarter effort to hand Delhi a 55-51 defeat.

Ahead, 29-24, at the half, Delhi began the second half with back-to-back threes from Kiera Holland and Sam Acuna for a 35-24 advantage. Purchase, however, responded with a 15-2 run to retake the lead, only for the Broncos to score in the last seconds to take a 44-43 lead into the fourth. With the game tied at 49-49 with three-and-a-half minutes to go, the Panthers scored the next six points to pounce on the victory in a game that featured 17 lead changes.

Sam Acuna made five 3-pointers on the night to finish with a team-high 20 points, while Kiera Holland ranked second on the team with 15 points, hitting three triples. Both had four rebounds on the night. Camryn McDonald led Delhi with five assists and nine boards, including three offensive, while Katelyn Lewis tallied eight rebounds with three assists.

Delhi shot 30.6 percent (19-for-62), connecting on 9-of-33 threes, while Purchase totaled 34.4 percent (22-for-64), making 5-of-22 triples. The Panthers held a 47-42 lead in rebounds.

The women have two more games before hitting winter break, starting with a road matchup at Alfred University this Saturday at 2:00 p.m., followed by a home game with Alfred State on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
