Palmer Tops Leaderboard as Broncos Win Season-Opening Tournament

DELHI, N.Y. (September 1, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi men's golf team teed off their 2019-20 season this weekend hosting The Apprentice School and Mid Atlantic Christian in a two-day tournament. The Broncos shot a 298 (+14) on Saturday and 301 (+17) Sunday for a first-place total of 599 (+31). Brandon Palmer held the lead both days with a 73 (+2) and 74 (+3), respectively, to finish first with a 147 (+5). The tournament was held at the par-71, 6,542-yard College Golf Course.

Including Palmer, Delhi took the first ten spots on the leaderboard. Contributing to the Broncos' team score was Jarrett McWilliams, who finished second overall with a 148 (73, 75). Alex Fisher earned fourth with a 151 (75, 76). Daniel Christy tied for fifth with a 153 (77, 76), while Zach Barrett earned ninth with a 157 (79, 78).

For the individual competitors, Aaron Oliver took third, improving by eight strokes on the second day for a 150 (79, 71). Jonathan Smolen had the Broncos' best improvement, going up nine strokes Sunday for fifth with a 153 (81, 72). Bobby Goerlich also finished fifth at 153 (77, 76), while Jason Cyr took eighth at 154 (74, 80) and Russell Herbert tenth with a 159 (81, 78). Ryan Clark finished 12th with a 160 (82, 78), as John Williamson tied Smolen with a nine-stroke improvement to take 14th with a 161 (85, 76).

Apprentice finished with a 652 (+84), tallying 326 both days for second place, as MAC shot a 739 (+171) with 375 and 364 scores.

Head coach Dave Arehart's men head down to Virginia next weekend for the Shenandoah Invitational from Sunday, Sept. 8 to Monday, Sept. 9.
