Volleyball Sweeps Utica in Highly-Attended Home Opener

The volleyball team huddles during a timeout in front of a large crowd.

DELHI, N.Y. (September 4, 2019) – The home season could not have started any better for the SUNY Delhi women's volleyball team Wednesday night, sweeping Utica in three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-18. Coupled with their shutout victories to King's (N.Y.) and Yeshiva on Sunday, head coach Beau Bracchy's team is 3-0 to start the year and winning nine straight sets.

Playing in front of a big home crowd, Delhi jumped out to early leads in each set, trailing just once the entire match. Behind, 5-4, in the opening contest, the Broncos cruised to 21 of the next 31 points for the comfortable win. They led by as many as seven points in the second set and eight points in the third to set some distance on their way to the win. A key factor to the win was Delhi's ability to win long rallies, outlasting the Pioneers on several long chances.

Witchney Clersainville charted a whopping 12 kills, while registering two solo blocks. Senior Erica Prindle set up 25 assists and 11 digs, while Chloe Elsenbeck added seven kills and 17 assists. Haylee Lefebvre provided four kills, two service aces and one solo block, as Taylor Tsatsis contributed five kills and the remaining service ace for Delhi. The Broncos totaled 33 kills, 11 in each set, to Utica's 19, and made just 16 errors as the Pioneers committed 35 errors.

Head coach Beau Bracchy's team has the rest of the week to enjoy the win, and are back at it on Tuesday when they host Sage at 7:00 p.m., followed by hosting Keystone on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
