DELHI, N.Y. (April 19, 2021) – Vengeful from a two-game sweep on Sunday, the SUNY Delhi softball team returned the favor in their Monday NAC West doubleheader with Cazenovia, delivering a 5-3 win in the opener and rallying from a 5-4 seventh-inning deficit to walk things off with a 6-5 win. The Broncos, now 7-5 in the NAC West (9-5 overall), handed the first-place Wildcats their first conference defeats to move them to 6-2 in league play (10-4 overall). Delhi, who sits in third place in the west, will play at second-place SUNY Poly this weekend in a series that may determine postseason implications.

GAME ONE: DELHI 5, CAZENOVIA 3

The Broncos got ahead early with a four-run first, beginning with a Shelby Nolan RBI double, followed by RBI singles from Mel Papuli, Jessica Kwasnik, and Dakota Baker. Cazenovia chipped away at Delhi's lead with one score in the second and two more in the third, but pitcher Katelynn Rose kept the Wildcats in check, allowing just three earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. She then turned it over to Papuli, who finished things out allowing just one hit and delivering two strikeouts in three scoreless frames. Rachael Scoones provided an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Delhi totaled nine hits, with Kwasnik and Baker each providing two hits. Rose, Papuli, and the defense stranded eight Wildcats runners, including four in scoring position.

GAME TWO: DELHI 6, CAZENOVIA 5

As they did just a day earlier, Cazenovia moved itself into position to win late, taking away a 4-3 Delhi lead with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings for a 5-4 lead. Carissa Crandall began the Broncos' seventh-inning rally with a leadoff single. Two batters later, Shelby Nolan doubled to left center, bring Crandall from first to home to tie the game. Kayla Beers carried a similar tune on the next at bat with her second RBI double of the game to walk things off.

Beers finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBIs, with her first RBI double giving the Broncos a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Katelynn Rose pitched the first five innings, allowing just three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts, and delivered a two-RBI single in the third to put Delhi in front at 3-2. Mel Papuli picked up the win after pitching the last two innings, giving up just one earned run on three hits with one strikeout. She added a triple to her batting total in the second inning, then scored off a Dakota Baker RBI double to open the scoring. Nolan went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI, while Mackenzie Sparacino went 2-for-4 with one double as the Broncos totaled 11 hits with five two-baggers and one triple for the contest.
