COBLESKILL, N.Y. (April 13, 2021) – SUNY Delhi softball opened their next NAC West series on Tuesday with a trip to SUNY Cobleskill. The Broncos were handed their first loss of the season 8-7 in the opener, but answered with a vengeance in game two with an 8-0 shutout win, guided by a three-hit shutout from pitcher Katelynn Rose. Delhi (7-1, 5-1 NAC West) returns to face Cobleskill (3-5, 1-3 NAC West) Wednesday for the final two games of their series.

GAME ONE: COBLESKILL 8, DELHI 7

Despite the Delhi bats rolling that included 13 hits and putting up a four-spot in the third, the Broncos were victim to 15 Cobleskill hits, a string of two-out rallies, and the Fighting Tigers pouncing on a few fielding miscues. Holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, a two-out fly ball fell in to left center field, prompting two Cobleskill runs, which the home team would replicate each of the next three innings. While the Broncos regained the lead twice with the four-run third and two more in the fifth, the Fighting Tigers' last two-run inning in the fifth proved costly. Cobleskill went from two outs and no one on to the next four batters reaching base and reclaiming the lead on a pair of RBI singles.

Kayla Beers connected on her first three at-bats as she and Mackenzie Sparacino each had a 3-for-4 afternoon with one double and one RBI. Pitcher Mel Papuli went six innings, allowing six earned runs on 15 hits with five strikeouts, while helping out her cause with one RBI. Shelby Nolan, Jessica Kwasnik, and Carissa Crandall all had one RBI, with Nolan batting 2-for-3. Dakota Baker went 2-for-4 with one double, while Jaylynn Sheppard was 2-for-3.

GAME TWO: DELHI 8, COBLESKILL 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

A vengeful Delhi squad got right to work in game two, capitalizing for eight runs on nine hits and seizing momentum with a three-run second and a five-run third. Pitcher Katelynn Rose stifled Cobleskill with a three-hit shutout performance.

The Broncos got started in the second by juicing the bases that led to Jaylynn Sheppard drawing a bases-loaded walk. Mackenzie Sparacino delivered a two-RBI double in the next at bat. They again loaded the bases to start the third, giving Mel Papuli the chance to break the game open on a two-RBI single. Carissa Crandall followed with a two-RBI double, then Sheppard served as the bookends of the scoring with a RBI single.

Crandall and Shelby Nolan each went 2-for-3, with Crandall delivering one double, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Crandall, Papuli, Sparacino, and Sheppard all had the pleasure of notching two RBIs and two stolen bases.
