Broncos Bats Erupt in Season Opener with NVU Lyndon

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (February 27, 2020) – The 2020 SUNY Delhi softball season opened with plenty of offensive power Thursday, as the Broncos combined for 56 runs over a two-game set versus Northern Vermont Lyndon at the Adirondack Sports Complex. Delhi took both contests in five innings, the first a 25-2 victory, then capped with a 31-3 win in the latter. Head coach Meagan Hillard's team opens the season at 2-0, and are off to Florida next week to play eight games in Fort Myers.

Senior Sierra Keesler led the offense on the day, batting a combined 7-for-9 with two home runs and nine RBIs. Freshman Katelynn Rose pitched the opening contest, holding the Hornets scoreless through the first four innings and even connecting for a grand slam in a 14-run Broncos second inning to aid her cause. She finished with seven strikeouts, allowing two runs on five hits, while batting 5-for-8 with one homer and 8 RBIs on the day. Samantha Mendelsohn and Shelby Nolan each added seven RBIs, with Mendelsohn going 7-for-9 with a pair of doubles and Nolan 7-for-10 with four doubles, including three in the first game.

The only time the Broncos trailed the Hornets was in the second game, behind, 3-1, after one. Delhi quickly nixed that with yet another 14-spot in the second, bolstered by a three-run jack from Keesler and a three-RBI, bases-clearing double from Picozzi. Senior Molly Greene pitched the entire latter contest, with the lefty posting three strikeouts with three runs allowed on six hits in five frames of action.

The Broncos' Florida trip consists of eight games over four days from Thursday, March 5 to Sunday, March 8. They'll play Albion and Drew on day one, followed by Clark and Martin Luther Friday, Kenyon and Finlandia Saturday, then Rochester Institute of Technology and Anna Maria Sunday.
