DELHI, N.Y. (September 13, 2018) – If the undefeated SUNY Delhi women's soccer team has learned anything lately about their abilities, it's their ability to win in overtime. That was on display Thursday as the Broncos won their second straight double-overtime home match, this time against Keystone in a 1-0 contest. Freshman Kelsey Innes, who suffered through several near-goals throughout the match, finally hit pay dirt for Delhi with 1:07 left to play. Head coach Lauren Mackay's team is now 5-0 on the year.
Innes fired an astounding 12 shots with eight on goal against the Giants. Early in the game, the Long Island native cleared Keystone goalie Rebekah Shepherd on a breakaway, but lost her footing to connect for the score. She also had a pair of shots that met the crossbar and post, plus a few that were just wide of the mark. Her last shot proved to be the payoff, as she received a pass in the box from Avalon Kubis following a successful cross to bury the game-winner with 1:07 left in the second overtime.
Delhi held a commanding 35-16 lead in the shots category, with 21 shots on goal. Katie Herba had seven shots with four on goal, while Brianna Laing had six shots with three on goal and Alexa Scaglione having five shots with two on goal. Goalie Rachael Scoones presided over the entire match, logging nine saves to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Broncos' triumph Thursday came eight days after their 2-1 double-overtime home victory over Elmira. The Delhi women have now surpassed their best start since 2007, in which that squad went undefeated through their first four contests.
Coach Mackay and the Broncos will hit the road for back-to-back contests, starting at Penn State Hazleton on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., followed by Morrisville State on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 p.m.
