Broncos Close Regular Season With Big Marks at Ocean Breeze

pole vaulter beginning his run

Staten Island, NY - The SUNY Delhi Track and Field teams wrapped up their regular season with a trip to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex in Staten Island for the Fast Track Invitational.  For some it was an opportunity to stay sharp as they prepare for the All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference Championship (AARTFC) while for others it was their last chance to post a big mark for their indoor season.

The big highlight of the meet came from Senior Chris Filatov.  Filatov cleared 4.50 meters (14' 9") on his second attempt to claim the program indoor record for himself.  Filatov had tied the record two weks ago when he cleared 4.45 meters for a new lifetime best.  With his second lifetime best in two weeks, Filatov looks like he is ready for the AARTFC Championships, jumping the best he ever has.  His mark is also higher than the outdoor school record for the event and is therefore the highest bar ever cleared by a Bronco vaulter.  His mark was good enough to make him Delhi's highest male finisher in the meet placing third.

Also running some great races were senior John Amenta and freshman Dayzin Lagare.  Amenta dropped a huge lifetime best in the 3,000 meter race, running 8:38.78.  That time was six seconds faster than his previous best set last year at the AARTFC Championship meet.  Lagare ran a strong 21.80 seconds in the 200 meters to place fifth in the competition.  While it is not his fastest time ever, it was very close to his 21.75 from two weeks earlier.

Leading the way for the women's team was thrower Kitty Messina.  Messina placed third in the meet in the shot put with a toss of 11.33 meters and fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.79 meters.  The women's Distance Medley Relay team of Eden Carr, Mary Bryant, Evelyn Eastman and Marissa Lombardi also posted a fourth place finish with a time of 14:47.25.

Next up for the Broncos is the AARTFC Championships to be held at Nazareth College on Friday and Saturday March 1st and 2nd.  The team will send seven men and three women to the meet as well as two men's relay teams.
