Delhi Ventures to Elmira; Drops Twice in Doubleheader

April 23, 2024 --- Elmira, NY


SUNY Delhi softball was on the road as they made their way to Elmira, NY for a doubleheader with Elmira College Soaring Eagles.


GAME 1: DELHI (0) vs. ELMIRA (1):


HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first three innings would be quiet for both teams. Delhi The Broncos would get a runner on base in each of the innings but wouldn't threaten until the 4th inning. The home team wouldn't fair any better; tallying single runners in the first and third.

In Delhi's half of the 4th inning, Carolina Watson led off with a double before advancing to third on a Danielle Seymour bunt attempt. Seymour would reach base on the attempt. Angelina Dickel would load the bases on a 5-pitch walk. It was the Elmira pitcher that would get out of the inning, retiring the next three batters, all on groundouts.

The rest of the fourth and the fifth inning were again quiet. The 0-0 deadlock was broken in the bottom of the 6th inning when Elmira singled in the game only run.

But Delhi wouldn't go down without a fight; again loading the bases in the 7th. The Broncos would ultimately drop the game: 1-0.

NOTES:

Seymour (4-9) through a 69-pitch, 2-hit complete game for the Broncos.

Kayla Beers added two singles to go along with Watson's double. 

Kaitlyn Stagno singled and walked twice.


GAME 2: DELHI (0) vs. ELMIRA (3):


HOW IT HAPPENED:

A scoreless first inning led into a 1-run inning for the home team. The Soaring Eagles would keep that lead through uneventful third and fourth innings.

Delhi would go down in order in the top of the fifth again. Elmira would extend the lead to 3-0, combining for 4 hits in the inning.

The visiting Broncos would be hitless up to the 7th inning before Beers singled to leadoff the inning. Beers would make it to third but wouldn't be able to cut into the lead.


NOTES:

Angelina Dickel (3-12) threw another strong game for the Broncos.

Hannah Caughey would be Delhi's only other baserunner, reaching on an error.


WHAT'S NEXT:

The Broncos (7-23) are on the road again this Friday and Saturday. It will be North Atlantic Conference action with three games against SUNY Canton. Delhi and the Roos will play a doubleheader on Friday and a solo game on Saturday morning.
