Delhi Plays Another Two With Cobleskill; Big Innings Doom Broncos

DELHI, NY (April 25, 2022) --- It was a long time coming but SUNY Delhi softball was finally able to host their first two games of the season in Delhi. Having just played a doubleheader on Friday, the Broncos and Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill were back at it. Unfortunately, the results from the previous two meetings of the season carried over with Delhi dropping both games in the doubleheader.

GAME 1:

SUNY Delhi 0 vs SUNY Cobleskill

Delhi would fall behind in the early stages of the game. Cobleskill would get back-to-back doubles in the top half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Cobleskill would threaten again in the 2nd inning, getting a runner to third but a heads-up defensive play by Delhi's Jessica Kwasnik ended the inning when a Cobleskill batter lined into a double play.

The Broncos would get a runner of their own to third in the bottom half of the second but would be left stranded. The lead stayed 1-0 until the fourth when the visitors tallied two more runs. The damage was done in the fifth when Cobleskill was able to stretch their lead to 8 runs. Kayla Beers would double with two outs in the bottom of the 5th but wouldn't be enough to spark any type of rally for the home team.

Katelynn Rose took the loss; working 4 innings before being relieved by Danielle Seymour. Beers' double was the only extra base hit for the Broncos.

Game 2:

SUNY Delhi 4 vs. SUNY Cobleskill 11

Both teams would reach double-digit hits in game 2 but multi-run innings by the Fighting Tigers were too much for Delhi. The Broncos got a strong pitching performance from Mel Papuli to start the game. Papuli would strike out 5 of the first 6 hitters she faced. Delhi would get an early 1-0 lead in the first. Kwasnik would single and Beers laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Kwasnik to second. A few batters later Kitty Kessina would single Kwasnik in.

Cobleskill would homer in the 3rd to take the lead 2-1 and would follow it up with two, RBI singles in the 4th. The Cobleskill lead jumped to 8-1 after the 5th inning thanks to a 3-run home run. The 6th inning saw Delhi's deficit grow to ten and they would need to get on the board to prevent the game from ending after 6 innings.

The rally caps had some magic as the Broncos pounded out three straight hits to start the bottom of the 6th inning. A Messina double brought home Seymour who singled to lead off the inning. Edasia Armstrong tallied another RBI with a groundout that scored Papuli who singled after Seymour. Rachael Scoones singled into right field to make sure the teams would play all seven innings. Messina would score. The home side would load the bases in their final at-bat but a game-ending double play would conclude the afternoon.

Papuli went 4.1 and was lifted for Rose, who finished the game for Delhi. Kwasnik, Seymour, Papuli, Messina, and Scoones each had two hit afternoons in game 2.

SUNY Delhi will have a three day reprieve before returning to the diamond on the weekend. The Broncos will travel to SUNY Canton for doubleheaders on Friday (3/5PM) and Saturday (12/2PM).
