Broncos Play Two With Wildcats, Can't Get Past Poly

SIDNEY, NY (April 24, 2022) --- SUNY Delhi softball moved off campus to Sidney High School to host SUNY Poly for two NAC games. Four-run innings in the second and seventh and a strong pitching performance propelled the visiting Wildcats to a game one win and Poly used some late-game scoring to take the second game.

GAME 1:

SUNY Delhi 0 vs. SUNY Poly 9

After a scoreless first frame by both teams, SUNY Poly got their afternoon started with a 4-run second inning; using 5 singles to push the runs across the plate. Delhi would get runners on base in the 2nd, 4th and 5th innings but couldn't quite get the offense rolling. The Poly bats were fairly quiet outside of a home run in the 5th. However, they were awakened again in the 7th when the Wildcats brought seven batters to the plate and tallied another 4-run inning.

Kayla Beers and Edasia Armstrong got the only hits for the Broncos.

Katelynn Rose pitched the complete game for Delhi. The Wildcats' Trinity Critelli picked up the win; striking out 13 along the way.

SUNY Delhi 1 vs. SUNY Poly 4

The second game of the afternoon started with each team managing to get a runner to third in both halves of the first inning but neither team was able to push that first run in. The second inning went by quietly as well. Poly was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, playing some small ball and eventually scoring on a passed ball. The Broncos would load the bases in response but failed to break the game open. Both teams sent 3 batters to the plate in the 4th and each were retired in order. The fifth saw two singles by Poly and an Armstrong single for Delhi.

The visitors got some insurance in the top of the 6th. The Broncos were able to get to two outs in the inning but the Wildcats had some timely hitting with two straight singles to take their lead to 3-0. The home side weren't going away and would get a run back. Mel Papuli doubled to start their sixth inning. A Kitty Messina groundout moved Papuli to one base closer to home. Jessica Kwasnik, the next batter, would single Papuli in. Delhi would go into their last at-bat down 4-1. Lauren Zecca walked to give the Broncos a baserunner but would be left stranded and the game would end two batters later.

Delhi (6-13, 3-4) will look to rebound with another doubleheader at home against Cobleskill tomorrow afternoon April 25. The games are scheduled for 3 and 5PM starts and to take place at home in Delhi.
