Broncos Get Back On the Diamond; Fall Twice in DH

HAZLETON, PA (April 12, 2022) -- SUNY Delhi softball finally got some cooperation from Mother Nature and were back on the diamond after a lengthy delay between games. The Broncos last played a competitive game on March 18 when they split a doubleheader with Houghton College. The Broncos would drop both games today on the road against Penn-State Hazleton.

SUNY Delhi 1 vs Penn State-Hazleton 9

In game 1 of the afternoon, the Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead; pushing 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning. The score would remain 4-0 in favor of the home team until the bottom part of the 5th. Penn State Hazleton scored two more runs off three hits in the inning. Delhi would get their lone run in the top of the 6th. Roselyn Monks singled to start of the 6th and would eventually score on an error by a Hazleton fielder. The game would finish up an inning early when the Nittany Lions brought 3 more runs home in the bottom of the 6th.

Monks had two singles for Delhi. Jessica Kwasnik accounted for a single and double.

Mel Papuli got the loss on the mound, going the full game and striking out 5.

SUNY Delhi 3 vs. Penn State-Hazleton 11

Game 2 began much like Delhi is accustomed to: scoring and taking an early lead. Kayla Beers singled and promptly stole 2nd. Beers would move to third on a ground out to the right side and would come across the plate on a throwing error two batters later. Unfortunately for the Broncos, the Nittany Lions' bats would come alive in the bottom of the 1st inning. The home team would bring 6 batters to the plate and score twice off three hits. Delhi would have to wait until the 5th to score again; Penn State-Hazleton would not. Hazleton broke the game open with 4 runs in the second inning, scored individual runs in the third and fourth, before finishing with three runs in the fifth.

Kwasnik and Beers would each single in the 5th and would each score on a Monks single to finish the scoring for Delhi.

Katelynn Rose went 4.2 innings and got the loss. Penn State-Hazleton would outhit Delhi 17-6 in game 2.

SUNY Delhi will take a 3-9 overall record with them when they travel to Cazenovia to open up NAC play this Friday and Saturday. The Broncos and Wildcats will play two doubleheaders; 3PM/5PM Friday and 1PM/3PM Saturday.
