Tennis Earns Home Court Advantage For Title Match With Thomas

DELHI, NY (April 23, 2022) - The Delhi men's tennis team played host to Thomas College today in a big showdown with major postseason implications.  Last Saturday, the Broncos traveled to Thomas College and lost to the Terriers 6-3 which gave Thomas the lead in the conference standings.  In order to even out the standings, the Broncos needed to avenge that loss.  With the win today, the conference records are even and Delhi earned the right to host the championship match on conference tie-breaking criteria.

The match started slowly for the Broncos with only one victory in doubles.  With losses at number one and two doubles, the combination of Daniel Distasio and Ryoto Yoshinaga picked up a victory for the Broncos at number three doubles by a score of 8-2.  While losing two of three doubles matches may have seemed like an issue, it was better than the match a week earlier where Delhi dropped all three doubles matches.  Heading into the singles lineup with one match flipped from a week ago, Delhi still needed to flip another match for the win.

In the singles matches, the Broncos kept their three wins from the last match with Jarod Rackliffe winning number one singles 6-0, 6-2, Ryoto Yoshinaga winning number four singles 6-2, 6-1.  However, they got a flip they were looking for from Christopher Balogh at number two singles where he won this match 6-2, 6-2.  With all the doubles matches completed and four singles matches done, the score stood at four wins for Delhi and three for Thomas.  As number five and six singles matches got started, Delhi needed one more victory to take the match overall.  They got just that in another flip from the week prior when Daniel Distasio won at number six singles 6-2, 6-4.  That win gave Delhi the five necessary to win the match and take home court advantage for the Championship in a week.  For good measure, Kyle Gonda also won at number five singles 6-4, 6-3 giving the Broncos a 6-3 win in the match.

The North Atlantic Conference Championship match between Thomas and Delhi will be held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday April 30, 2022 with a time to be announced.  The winner of that match will advance to a crossover competition with the winner of the United East Conference to determine who will compete in the NCAA Tournament.
