Yanira Dawson Joins Broncos as New Head Athletic Trainer, Senior Woman Administrator

DELHI, N.Y. (July 22, 2021) – The SUNY Delhi Athletics Department is pleased to introduce Yanira Dawson DAT, ATC, FMT-C as its new Head Athletic Trainer and Senior Woman Administrator entering the 2021-22 year. Dawson joins the college ranks following a budding athletic training career at the high school level, mainly at Elmont Memorial High School in Elmont, N.Y.

"As the Director of Athletics at SUNY Delhi, I am very pleased to welcome Yanira Dawson to the Broncos team," said Bob Backus. "We are very fortunate to have such a well qualified individual bring her Athletic Training expertise to SUNY Delhi Athletics. As we embark on our full NCAA Division III membership, having her on our staff will be a tremendous addition for our student-athletes."

"This is an exciting time to be a Bronco, and pivotal time in athletics with the full designation into DIII sports. I relish in the opportunity to not only serve as the Head Athletic Trainer, but also the Senior Woman Administrator in the Athletic Department. Health, safety, and equity are my top priorities for all that come through our doors. I'm looking forward to working with the students, staff, and community here at SUNY Delhi to promote the field of Athletic Training and general health."

Dawson is a 2014 graduate of Utica College, earning her Bachelor's in Health Studies. She served as a college student athletic trainer while pursuing her Master's from Shenandoah University in Athletic Training, which included stops at Shenandoah and Shepherd. She recently earned her Doctorate in Athletic Training from Florida International University. Dawson is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national honors society.

She has served as the Head Athletic Trainer at Elmont Memorial High School since 2016, also serving as a teaching aide for the school. Dawson also held down clinical positions at nearby Northwell Health Orthopedic and Professional Physical Therapy. Her athletic training repertoire also extends to a summer stint at the Long Island Nets G-League Skills Camp.

Dawson has been a member of the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) since 2015. She is a certified CPR instructor through the American Red Cross and also holds a certification in movement taping.
