DELHI, N.Y. (April 27, 2021) - SUNY Delhi Athletics is proud to be back in the competitive swing of things this spring, and even prouder to celebrate our new batch of Broncos of the Week! This week's recognition goes out to track & field's Sophie Stewart and men's lacrosse's Brandon McGrath.
Sophie Stewart (Newark Valley / Newark Valley) made the most out of her first two collegiate track & field competitions. At the season-opening Mt. St. Mary/Castleton Tri-Meet, Stewart hit the AARTFC qualifying mark in her first 3000-meter steeplechase with a 12:05.37 first-place finish. She followed this up at Saturday's NAC West Invitational by finishing second in the 800 meters at 2:31.58, just four seconds off teammate Katerina Salcedo's leading pace, and third in the 1500 meters at 5:14.45, eight seconds removed from first place.
Brandon McGrath (Campbell Hall, NY / Goshen Central) served as a steady cog in the SUNY Delhi men's lacrosse scoring machine, racking up ten points in the Broncos' 41 combined goals for two NAC West wins. McGrath posted one goal with two assists in Saturday's 19-8 revenge win over SUNY Canton, scoring the second goal of the contest to break a nearly ten-minute scoreless standoff to give Delhi a 2-0 first-quarter advantage. He then helped the Broncos pull away during a seven-goal second period, assisting on a Jack McClurg goal for a 6-4 lead. In Monday's 22-3 division win over SUNY Cobleskill, Brandon had a day with seven points on five goals and two assists, with all but one goal accounting for Delhi's 12-goal first half. Two of his goals came on man-up opportunities.
