SUNY Delhi Announces Fall 2020 Reopening Plan for Athletics

DELHI, N.Y. (July 20, 2020) - Following a decision from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) to suspend all conference contests and championship seasons for Fall 2020 while not limiting member institutions from individually conducting practices and athletic events, the SUNY Delhi athletics department is announcing its plan for athletic activities for student-athletes this fall.

SUNY Delhi plans to conduct team practices, workouts, and strength and conditioning activities in Fall 2020 while adhering to institutional reopening safety guidelines that include social distancing, face coverings, and enhanced disinfecting procedures. Intercollegiate contests with other member institutions will be considered on a sport-by-sport basis later in the semester.

SUNY Delhi's reopening plan includes staggered arrival dates for students, starting in mid-August, varied instructional modes which include in person, online, and hybrid models, and student-athletes will undergo a resocialization period prior to engaging in athletics. In-person classes will run through November 20 and then go online for the remainder of the semester. Decisions on winter sports will be made at a later date. Additionally, all indoor recreational facilities in Clark Field House will undergo new procedures to meet resocialization, safety, and social distancing guidelines. Plans are being developed to reopen the fitness center and Floyd L. Maines Arena in the early part of the semester, with constant monitoring and modifications made as needed.

"Although the fall semester will be different, our staff is prepared to welcome our student-athletes and is committed to conducting athletic activities safely on campus," says SUNY Delhi Director of Athletics Bob Backus. "The physical, emotional, and mental well-being of our students remains our priority as we continue to closely monitor ongoing changes and updates from the NAC and NCAA."
