SUNY Delhi Statement on Racism and Injustice

SUNY Delhi Statement on Racism and Injustice

On behalf of SUNY Delhi Athletics, SUNY Delhi wishes to address the current issues concerning racial injustice and inequality across our country:

We can't breathe.

The events that have been occurring in our nation for the past few [weeks] have troubled us and have taken our breath away. Members of our campus community are experiencing pain, grief, and sorrow as a result of another Black life being a taken away by an act of senseless violence. When one community member hurts, we all hurt.

We fully support the actions of peaceful protesters to bring attention to the cause. We also understand the powerful emotions of anger and frustration that many people are experiencing as a result of generations of oppression and inequality.

We must act together, as a community, to bring an end to the racist violence and injustice that people of color, especially the Black community, have had to endure. We have to acknowledge that institutional racism and inequality exists in our society and it must come to an end.

We must engage in learning more about anti-racism and decolonization. We must be honest with ourselves and seek to unlearn the biases that we have been taught throughout our lives.

Moving forward, we will offer an Anti-Racist & Decolonization Education Series, designed to assist our campus community with learning ways in which we can enact socially just change within our campus community and the world. To learn more about this initiative, contact the MOSAIC Multicultural Center at mosaic@delhi.edu.

It is our duty to support and uphold values of equity and justice. Together, we can better ourselves and SUNY Delhi, and create a better world for all.

In solidarity,

Dr. Michael Laliberte, SUNY Delhi President
Dr. Tomás A. Aguirre, Vice President for Student Life and Chief Diversity Officer
Mr. Jarvis McCowin, Assistant Director of MOSAIC Multicultural Center
