Women's Cross Country Takes Third at USCAA National Championships for Second Straight Year

The women's cross country team holds their third place USCAA National Championship plaque.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (November 8, 2019) – Although they came to the USCAA National Championships with mostly a different lineup than last year's, the SUNY Delhi women's cross country team posted the same result with a third-place finish for the second straight year. Returning just three runners from 2018's bronze team, two of those returnees in Arielle Moheimani and Katerina Salcedo were Delhi's top finishers, as Moheimani received First Team honors and Salcedo Second Team. Freshman Sophie Stewart capped her stellar rookie season with Second Team accolades to help Delhi finish with 68 points.

In her last career cross country race, Moheimani placed sixth with a time of 23:52.28, while Salcedo took ninth at 24:13.17 and Stewart 13th at 24:27.17. Shyanne Lawton earned 22nd with a mark of 25:49.64, as Mary Lyons placed 24th at 25:59.77 and Mersadie Dibbell rounded out the team scoring in 25th at 26:03.34. Jillian Hernandez ran for 32nd place at 27:02.89, while Jewel Pignetti finished her XC career in 50th place at 29:18.33.

Saint Mary of the Woods won the USCAA team championship with 30 points, boasting three in the top four, while SUNY ESF placed second with 58 points. Dallas' Anna Wilgenbusch won the individual national title with a time of 21:58.15.

"All of our women ran lifetime bests, with five of our top six women running more than a minute better than their previous 6K bests," said head coach Robb Munro. "Our top six all ran in the program's all-time top 20 for 6K today, with Arielle, Katerina and Sophie at two, three, and five respectively. They went after it with wreckless abandon today and never flinched. Arielle's last career cross country race today was a 1:33 lifetime best. She ran like she was possessed and it was a beautiful thing to watch!"

Moheimani finished her career as a two-time USCAA All-American, having finished as a Second Team honoree last season with a 12th-place finish. Salcedo picked up her second straight Second Team placement after finishing 11th last year.

Coach Munro's women completed an outstanding 2019 campaign, where they won two regular-season meets and their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship on Saturday. It marked their third NCAA conference title in the last four years. Stewart's freshman campaign included her being named a USCAA Runner of the Week, four-time NAC Rookie of the Week, and finally NAC Rookie of the Year. She was the top rookie finisher at the NAC Championships. Coach Munro was named the NAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
