Women's Basketball Upended by Late Purchase Rally, Fall in OT

PURCHASE, N.Y. (February 4, 2019) – Leading by as many as 14 points with just over five minutes remaining, the SUNY Delhi women's basketball team could not stop a 16-2 run from Purchase that sent the game into their first overtime of the season. The host Panthers went on to capture a 71-68 overtime win that sent the Broncos back to Delhi with an 11-10 record.

The women took a 34-29 lead into halftime, and used a strong third quarter to enter the fourth up, 54-42. The Broncos kept up the energy to begin the fourth quarter, with a Kiera Holland layup extending Delhi's lead to its largest of the game at 62-48 with 5:50 remaining. Purchase used three 3-pointers to fuel its run down the stretch, with the final triple by Arta Krasniqi tying things up at 64-64 with less than one minute to go in regulation. Diana Echols and Katelyn Lewis each stepped up to score a basket in overtime, but it would be all the Broncos could score in the extra frame. Purchase's Amber Jones made a go-ahead three with under three minutes left that stood as the deciding basket.

Holland and Samiaya Salley each made three triples on the night to account for all six of Delhi's threes. Holland had a double-double with 26 points, ten rebounds and five assists, while Salley had 19 points with five boards and seven assists. Echols also had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, as Lewis garnered four points with 12 rebounds. Brenna Gioffe had four points with eight boards.

The Broncos finished at 37.0 percent shooting (30-for-81) and made 6-of-28 threes, while the Panthers totaled 33.7 percent (29-for-86) and 6-of-23, respectively. Delhi made just 2-of-10 free throws as Purchase made 7-of-10. The Panthers held a 24-0 lead in bench points. Purchase's top performers included Jones making four 3-pointers for 26 points, and Nyasia Harris collecting 15 points and 22 rebounds, including ten offensive.

Head coach Courtney Hoyt's team returns to Floyd L. Maines Arena on Wednesday, playing Cazenovia at 7:00 p.m. as part of SUNY Delhi Athletics' Gold Night.
