Holland Leads with 22 Points in Friday Night Meeting at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. (December 7, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team began their weekend road trip Friday evening with a visit to Alfred. The Broncos responded from a 26-8 deficit after one quarter to cut the Saxons' lead to seven by halftime. But Alfred used a solid third quarter to stifle the Delhi's comeback hopes on their way to handing the Broncos a 71-56 defeat. The ladies' four game-winning streak came to end as they carry over to a 6-4 record.

The Saxons scored the first five points of the game, and never relinquished the lead. The first few minutes proved competitive, with Delhi trailing just 10-6 halfway through the period. But Alfred took over, closing out the quarter on a 16-2 run. They piled on to begin the second quarter to lead by as much as 21 points before the Broncos staged a furious charge to score 22 points in the period. This included a 19-2 Delhi run that shrunk the Saxons' lead to as little as four just as the ladies entered halftime behind, 37-30. Alfred reclaimed control with a 22-point third quarter, bringing their lead back up by as much as 20 by quarter's end, a deficit that proved too much for the Broncos to overcome.

Kiera Holland led all scorers with 22 points, along with three rebounds and three steals. She shot 9-for-14 on the night and 2-of-3 from long range. Camryn McDonald logged a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as well as three assists and three steals. Samiaya Salley totaled 11 points with eight assists and five rebounds, while Sam Acuna netted six points.

The Broncos fared better from the floor than their hosts, shooting 39.3 percent (24-for-61) to AU's 32.9 percent (26-for-79). However, Delhi made just 3-of-17 from 3-point range and 5-of-13 on free throws, as the Saxons made 8-of-26 and 11-of-16, respectively. Alfred led in rebounds, 50-33, including 22-7 in offensive boards, which led to a 21-6 Saxons advantage in second-chance points.

Head coach Courtney Hoyt's team now heads to Houghton to take on the Highlanders Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
