Watson Breaks School Pole Vault Record

Results

The SUNY Delhi Track and Field teams traveled to Ithaca College for the Bomber Invitational.  The team had a great showing for both the men's and women's teams.

Leading the highlights for the women was freshman pole vaulter Kelcey Watson who broke the school record she had tied earlier in the season.  Watson had cleared 3.20 meters earlier in the season to tie Shantell Surowicz and Maddesen Weekes who cleared the same mark in 2000 and 2013 respectively. On her second attempt today she cleared 3.35 meters (10'11.75") to take the record as her own.  The jump placed her fourth overall in the meet.

Another strong performance for the women came from freshman Khiere Ashley.  Ashley, who earned All-American in cross country this past fall, showed her range as she just missed the school records in both the 500 meters (1:20.25) and 200 meters (26.97).  Her performance in the 500 meters was good for fourth place in the meet.

For the men, junior Keimon Barrow led the way.  Barrow already had the facility record with his mark of 14.58 meters from the same meet last year.  After securing the win on his second to last attempt in the event with a mark of 14.44 meters, Barrow shattered the meet and facility record on his final attempt with a jump of 14.99 meters (49' 2.25").  He then went to the high jump where he won the event with a new facility record of 2.08 meters (6' 9.75").  He took three good attempts at 2.14 meters (7'0.25") but was unable to make the clearance.

Also winning events for the men were sophomore Walter Briggs and freshman Kobie Lane.  Briggs ran under 50 seconds in an open 400 meters for the first time in his career with a mark of 49.79, just shy of the school record set by Romaine Angel in 2014.  Briggs was in second place at the end of his first lap and was able to make the pass on the leader down the backstretch on the second lap.  The two athletes raced side by side down the straight and through the turn before Briggs was able to pull away in the final straightaway.  Lane won the men's 5000 meters with a time of 15:45.69, eleven seconds ahead of the next finisher.

Other top finishes for the men included the men's 1600 meter relay team of Ricardo Castello, Antonio Gomes, Kevin Williams, and Briggs placed third overall with a time of 3:24.91, freshman TJ Robinson who placed fifth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.73 and junior Brian McLeod who placed sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.94 meters (6' 4").

The teams will travel to Colgate University for their invitational next weekend.
