Ben Finnigan Introduced as Cross Country/Track & Field Assistant Coach, Interim Swimming & Diving Coach

DELHI, N.Y. (September 9, 2021) – The SUNY Delhi Athletics Department is pleased to welcome Ben Finnigan on staff as the assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach. He will also serve as the Interim Swimming & Diving Coach.

"We couldn't be happier having Ben join our department with his experience and knowledge," said Director of Athletics Bob Backus. "He offers a lot to our program as a young professional and we are so fortunate he has chosen SUNY Delhi as the place to take his coaching abilities and our student-athletes' talents to the next level."

Originally from Dover, N.H., Finnigan is a 2019 graduate and former cross country and distance runner at NCAA Division I Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. He ranks fifth all-time in school history in the indoor Distance Medley Relay (9:56.32), accomplished at the 2019 IC4A Championships. For outdoors he holds the seventh-fastest time in the 1500 meters (3:50.76). As the cross country team captain as a senior he helped the Mountaineers to their first Northeast Conference (NEC) championship in 20 years. He received his Bachelor's in Business Management.

Finnigan completed his collegiate running career at fellow NEC institution Wagner College in Staten Island, where during the 2019-20 year the Seahawks won their first NEC team title in cross country and indoor track & field. He anchored the school record DMR team that clocked in at 9:49.54.

He stayed on at Wagner as a volunteer assistant for the 2020-2021 season, where he helped the program to its first-ever NEC Outdoor Track Championship and repeating as cross country champions. Working closely with the distance squad, Finnigan assisted in coaching 12 individual Northeast Conference champions. While at Wagner, Finnigan assisted in the breaking of three school records in the 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 10,000 meters. He earned his Master's in Business Administration in 2021.

Finnigan is currently in the process of acquiring a USATF Level I certification.
