Broncos Use Heroics to Beat Anna Maria to Wrap Florida Trip

The Broncos celebrate a win following the conclusion of a game.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 8, 2020) – The fourth and final day of the SUNY Delhi softball team's Florida trip was capped off with a victory. After falling to Rochester Institute of Technology, 14-2, in the opener, the Broncos overcame a two-run deficit to defeat Anna Maria by a 4-2 score. Head coach Meagan Hillard's squad returns home with a 3-7 record, with their first game back slated for a home meeting versus Houghton on Saturday, Mar. 21 beginning at 2:00 p.m.

RIT 14, DELHI 2

The Broncos and Tigers were scoreless through the first three innings with one hit. That all changed in the fourth when RIT posted four runs on two hits, while taking advantage of a pair of errors. Though Delhi responded with two runs in the bottom portion off a Samantha Mendelsogn two-RBI double, the Tigers pulled away with two runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and four in the seventh.

Katelynn Rose pitched the first three-plus innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Alexis Cobb pitched one inning, surrendering one earned run on one hit, while Molly Greene allowed two earned runs on three hits over two innings pitched. The Broncos were guilty of nine errors, as nine of RIT's runs were unearned.

DELHI 4, ANNA MARIA 2

A windy afternoon played to the Broncos' favor, as Samantha Mendelsohn's fly ball to left carried and fell in to bring in the two go-ahead runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Molly Greene pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits. She and Katelynn Rose each batted 2-for-4 as the Broncos totaled nine hits.

Anna Maria went up early with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Delhi froze the Amcats over the next two innings. This set the stage for Kayla Beers to tie the game on a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the fourth.

AMC had chances to score over the next four innings, but the Broncos stood firm to remain in position to win. Several defensive highlights included catcher Dakota Baker throwing out leadoff hitter Kassandra Register attempting to steal second in the bottom of the fourth. AMC's Maria Scandalito led off the fifth with a base hit, with an ensuing sacrifice bunt moving her to second with one out. She advanced to third after a ground out to second, but got no further after a pop out to second on the next at bat ended the inning. The Amcats threatened even further in the sixth with runners on second and third with one out, only for the Broncos to force two infield popouts to get out of the jam. Scandalit led off the bottom of the seventh advancing to third on an error, but Delhi once again came through with three consecutive outs to strand her.

Shelby Nolan, Dakota Baker, and Natasha Picozzi each had singles to account for the Broncos' remaining hits.
