FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 10, 2019) – A low-scoring, yet tight game through one quarter for SUNY Delhi men's lacrosse Wednesday at Farmingdale State was undone by the Rams outscoring the Broncos, 13-5, through the latter three periods for a 15-8 final decision. Delhi was held to one goal in the second and fourth quarters, and despite a third-quarter surge to get to within two of its SUNY brethren, the Broncos moved to 9-4 for just their second defeat in their last 11 games.
Things started off swift for Delhi, with John Rohan netting the first two goals of the game to put the team up, 2-0, with 7:40 left in the opening quarter. The Rams responded with two scores from Aj Sandorfi for a 2-2 tie after one. Farmingdale State carried the momentum over to outscore the Broncos, 4-1, in the second period for a 6-3 halftime lead, with Malik Talbert scoring Delhi's lone goal in the period. Talbert, the reigning NAC Player of the Week who finished with five goals and one assist on the afternoon, looked to give the Broncos a spark in the third quarter, scoring Delhi's first two goals in the half to cut the Rams' lead to two goals both times. While the latter put the Broncos within reach at 7-5, Farmingdale pulled away with three consecutive scores. Despite Delhi getting two back from scores by Ross Cange and Talbert to end the quarter, the Rams delivered five fourth-quarter goals, countered only by Talbert's fifth and final score on the day.
Farmingdale State led in shots, 50-32, including 25-15 in shots on goal. Broncos goalie Travis Anderson had ten saves on the day, as the team converted on 13-of-19 clear attempts and forced the Rams into 18 turnovers. Delhi scored on 1-of-4 extra-man opportunities, while Farmingdale came through on 1-of-2 chances. Faceoff man Nick Dower held the edge in the midfield game, winning 14-of-27 faceoffs.
Rohan's pair of goals jumped his NAC-leading scoring totals to 59 points and 49 goals. Talbert, who is second in the league this season with 51 points and 39 goals, is seven goals away from reaching the 100 career goals in just three seasons competing for Delhi; he has 126 career points on 93 goals and 33 assists. Anderson continues to lead the NAC with an 8.08 goals against average and 138 total saves. He is second with a 56.8 save percentage.
Head coach Sam Miller's team returns to NAC action on Saturday, meeting up with Northern Vermont Lyndon at Norwich University for a 1:00 p.m. showdown. The Broncos are undefeated in conference play at 4-0 for first place, and can clinch a berth in the NAC/NECC Tournament with a win over the Hornets, along with SUNY Canton defeating Husson in their Saturday NAC matchup at 3:30 p.m. Delhi will then host second-place SUNY Canton (5-6, 3-0 NAC), the NAC's lone other unbeaten conference contender, on Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m., and wrap up the regular season at Mount Saint Vincent Wednesday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m.
The NAC/NECC Tournament semifinals will take place on Saturday, April 27, with the first-place NAC team hosting the second-place NECC squad and vice versa. The winners will square off in the finals on Saturday, May 4.
