BANGOR, Me. (March 23, 2019) – Four days after reaching the 100-career-point milestone, senior Malik Talbert scored Delhi's first three goals in under the opening four minutes of their NAC matchup at Husson Saturday. His early scoring spree ignited the Broncos to a convincing 12-5 victory over the Eagles, as head coach Sam Miller's squad returns home with a six-game winning streak and improving to 6-2 and 2-0 in league play. It also marked the Broncos' first win of the season outside New York State.
Talbert, who reached the century mark in Delhi's win over SUNY Cobleskill Tuesday, carried his momentum over versus the Eagles, netting a hat trick on three consecutive shots by the time the game clock showed 11:12 remaining in the first, as the Broncos led, 3-0. He found the lower corner on his first goal, then top shelf the next two. Husson's Gunner McAllister got one back for the home team just over a minute later, only for Travis Biggs to score two straight for Delhi to close out the opening quarter ahead, 5-1. Eagle Adam Littlefield opened the second quarter with a score to cut the Broncos' lead to three with 14:25 to play in the half, but freshman goalie Travis Anderson, who had just one save in the first quarter, retaliated with nine saves to shut out Husson for the remainder of the half. Biggs and team-leading scorer John Rohan responded to the defense's effort with a goal apiece to give Delhi a 7-2 lead at intermission.
Rohan, who would tack on three second-half goals for a game-high four goals and five points, opened the third quarter netting a score to five Delhi its largest lead up to that point at 8-2. While Husson's Littlefield and Matt Verrill scored two straight to cut the lead to 8-4, the Broncos' defense made sure that would be the closest their hosts would come. Junior Brandon Katz finished out the third quarter with his fourth goal of the season to put Delhi up, 9-4, entering the fourth. Rohan charged on with his last two goals of the day to open the fourth to stretch Delhi's lead to 11-4. On the ensuing faceoff, midfielder Nick Dower, who won 9 faceoffs on the day, scooped up the ball and ran it in for a score to all but put the game away as the Broncos led, 12-4. A Husson goal by Merrill made up the remaining score of the afternoon.
While the Eagles outshot the Broncos, 46-36, Anderson racked up 15 saves on 20 shots on goal to fend off Husson. The three-time defending NAC weekly award winner improved his NAC-best goals allowed average to 8.25, and is second in the league with a 60.5 save percentage. Rohan now leads the conference with 32 points and 25 goals, while Talbert is second in the NAC with 31 points and 24 goals. Freshman Brandon McGrath had a game-high four assists as he now leads the conference with 12 assists. Biggs now ranks fifth in the NAC with 22 points on 15 goals and seven assists. Delhi was successful on 20-of-28 clear attempts and forced the Eagles into 33 turnovers.
Coach Miller's team will be back in New York for their next three games. They travel to Marcy to face SUNY Poly on Wednesday, followed by hosting NAC-opponent Thomas on Saturday, Mar. 30 at SUNY Oneonta. Delhi will then welcome Houghton for midweek evening contest on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:00 p.m.
