Talbert Scores Four in Delhi's NCAA Debut at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. (February 27, 2019) – The NCAA Division III era of SUNY Delhi men's lacrosse opened its first chapter Wednesday evening, with the Broncos making their 2019 season debut at Randolph. While Delhi kept up with the Wildcats, never trailing by more than three goals and cutting to within one five times, the Broncos came up short in a 9-7 contest.

Randolph opened the game with two straight goals, only to witness Jacob Nygard scoring the first goal of the Broncos season, assisted by Brian Conti, with 2:19 to play in the first quarter. The Wildcats scored one more goal before the quarter's end, and opened the second period with a score to go up by three at 4-1. The Broncos responded with two straight goals to finish out the half, courtesy of Malik Talbert and John Rohan III, to trail just 4-3 at intermission.

Randolph and SUNY Delhi exchanged goals in the third quarter to enter the fourth with the Wildcats up, 6-5. Talbert scored both of the Broncos' goals in the period. Randolph then opened the final quarter with a goal to go up, 7-5, but Delhi answered once more on a Travis Biggs goal with 8:23 remaining. The Wildcats, however, put some distance with two straight scores that all but decided the game. Talbert closed out the scoring with his game-best fourth goal of the game on a man-up opportunity with less than a minute remaining.

In his goalie debut, freshman Travis Anderson totaled 11 saves for Delhi, as the Wildcats held a 40-29 lead in shots and a 20-15 advantage in shots on goal. The Broncos converted on 13-of-16 clear opportunities, and held the Wildcats to 1-of-13 on man-up opportunities. Midfielder Nick Dower won 8-of-19 faceoff opportunities for the Broncos.

Head coach Sam Miller's team heads to Bridgewater for their next contest on Saturday to wrap up their mid-winter break trip in Virginia. Upon arriving back to New York State next week, the Broncos will play three road games. It starts with Purchase on Mar. 6, followed by Wells on Mar. 9 and Cazenovia on Mar. 13.
