The SUNY Delhi Cross Country teams traveled to Virginia Beach, VA for the USCAA National Cross Country Championships held at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Veteran's Day.
The event started off with a banquet on Thursday evening for honors and recognitions. The highlight of the evening came when sophomore Nick Arnecke was recognized as the USCAA National Student-Athlete of the Year. This recognition is based on Nick's involvement in the community, his academic achievements and his athletic performance. National All-Academic Team honors were earned by Arnecke, sophomore Morgan Hulbert, sophomore Elise McIntyre and sophomore Ryan Roosa. Finally, Coach Robb Munro was recognized as the Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year.
Friday morning, the women started off the day with their best performance of the year. The team was led by sophomore Isamarie Ramos, who placed 12th overall to earn her first All-American recognition. Senior Kelsey Esselman (29th), Sophomore Elise McIntyre (42nd), freshman Ashley Magnifico (60th) and sophomore Rainey Cerqua (65th) rounded out the scoring five positions while freshman Morgan Hulbert (68th) and sophomore Xochilt Cortez (113th) were the sixth and seventh runners for the Broncos. The team score added to 191 points which was good for a sixth place team finish in the field of 22 teams which was won by Cleary University from Michigan.
Next up was the men's race, and they finished off their season just as they had hoped. Led by sophomore Kobie Lane (4th), Nick Arnecke (7th) who earned first team All-American, and sophomore Andrew Davis (9th) and freshman Connor Oakman (10th) who earned second team All-American honors. The fifth man across the line was freshman Jon Messler (16th) and was closely followed by senior Jack Hillenbrand (18th) and Lucas Reilly (19th) rounded out the seven Bronco runners. The result was a team score of 46 points which was good enough to win the National Championship over the defending champions, Berea College of Kentucky.
The win marks the first National Championship for a SUNY Delhi athletic program since the move to the four-year level.
