Seniors Score to Rally on Senior Day, But Late Goal Hands Delhi 3-2 Defeat

ONEONTA, N.Y (October 20, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi women's soccer team recognized their seven graduating players prior to their thrilling game against Bryant & Stratton Syracuse Saturday afternoon. The game took place at SUNY Oneonta's All College Field. While the visiting Bobcats looked to have things under control with a 2-0 second-half lead, Broncos seniors Katie Herba and Devin Baratto used the occasion to combine for goals to tie the match at 2-2. But a late Bryant & Stratton goal in the 82nd minute gave the visitors a 3-2 victory.

Departing players Devin Baratto, Esther Ferrusi, Samantha Friedman, Tiffany Leigh, Katie Herba, Alexis Moore and Jacqueline Slentz were recognized prior to the match for their extraordinary careers as student-athletes at SUNY Delhi. All will be graduating with degrees from the college's Criminal Justice, Veterinary Technology, Nursing, Business and Technology Management, Culinary Arts and Event Management programs.

Both teams were gridlocked in the first half, nearly playing to a scoreless first half. Slentz started the game in goal, collecting three saves in the opening period. The Bobcats, however, broke through with 42 seconds remaining, when Portia Davis score her first goal of the day as Delhi trailed one down at the half.

Freshman keeper Rachael Scoones came on for the Broncos in goal for the second half, garnering three saves on the day. Despite these adjustments on defense, Davis struck again in minute 52 to give Bryant & Stratton some distance for a 2-0 lead. SUNY Delhi kept on the attack, managing 13 shots with seven on goal for the game. But it wasn't until the 73-minute mark that Herba initiated the Broncos' breakthrough by pulling the women to within one. Four minutes later, Baratto received a through ball from freshman Alexa Scagliano for the equalizer. However, with eight minutes remaining, Bobcat Koemhong Hout delivered a liner between two defenders that passed by the diving Scoones for the deciding score.

As the Broncos wrapped up their home season standing at 9-3, they will finish their regular season on the road for their last two contests. Their first test will be at SUNY Poly on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 6:00 p.m., then at Fisher on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m.

Delhi has a lot to look forward to in the postseason, as head coach Lauren Mackay's team earned the third seed for the ACAA Tournament. The ladies will take on Alfred State in the conference semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Finlandia University (Mich.).
