Herba Nets Four in 8-2 Rout of Penn State Hazleton

DELHI, N.Y. (September 3, 2017) – After what appeared to be a close match, with SUNY Delhi holding a 3-2 lead 25 minutes in, the Broncos broke loose for five unanswered goals, along with a match-high five points and four scores from Katie Herba, as Delhi trounced Penn State Hazleton, 8-2, in their home opener. The win marked first-year head coach Lauren Mackay's first career win, as the Broncos climbed to 1-1. The Lions dropped to 1-1.

The Broncos led, 5-2, at intermission, with Herba already tallying a hat trick in the first half and an assist. It marked the second year in a row Herba registered a hat trick in the first half against Hazleton. The sophomore forward supplied the first score in the sixth minute to put Delhi ahead, 1-0, before Hazleton's Katie Oldziejewski tied things up in the eighth minute. Emily Guerra put the Broncos back out in front off a feed from Herba in the 17th minute, then Herba came through again in the 24th minute, intercepting a goal kick from keeper Devon Keiper and giving Delhi a 3-1 lead. After Oldziejewski scored again to cut the lead to one in the 25th minute, Herba once again answered with a strike one minute later. Stephanie Mason closed out the first-half scoring with a 28th-minute goal.

The second started a little subtler, going scoreless for roughly the first 18 minutes. That was until Herba banked a shot from the top left of the box off the crossbar in minute 64 to give the Broncos a 6-2 advantage. Mason had her second goal of the day off a free kick from Brianna Volans in the 74th minute, while Volans picked up a score herself two minutes later.

The Broncos outshot the Lions, 35-6, with 28 shots on goal to Hazleton's four. Jacqueline Slentz picked up her first career win, tallying two saves as she improved to 1-1 on the year. Keiper had 20 saves for Hazleton as she fell to 1-1.

Mason finished second on Delhi with two goals, while Volans had two points on one goal and one assist. Guerra had one goal.
