DELHI, N.Y. (February 6, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team welcomed Cazenovia Wednesday night as part of SUNY Delhi Athletics' Gold Night. While the Broncos had three players score in double figures and playing Caz evenly to a 34-34 score at halftime, Delhi was not able to match the Wildcats' 40 second-half points, leading to a 74-53 defeat. The Broncos are now 11-11 on the season.
Fans flocked to Floyd L. Maines Arena Wednesday to watch the women's and men's teams take part in a doubleheader with the Wildcats. The first 500 fans received a free gold t-shirt, courtesy of the SUNY Delhi Health and Counseling Services, Student Senate, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committtee. The Delhi campus and community even took part in the "SUNY's Got Your Back" volunteer effort throughout the day in Clark Field House leading up to the games, where a total of 1,937 personal care bags were filled that will be donated to local shelters, crisis centers and hospitals.
Kiera Holland led the game with 19 points, along with eight rebounds, while Diana Echols garnered a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Sam Acuna logging 11 points. Katelyn Lewis and Samiaya Salley each had six points, with Lewis grabbing eight boards and Salley six.
Entering the second half, both sides continued to exchange buckets, with Caz building an 8-2 run in the final three minutes of the quarter to enter the fourth up, 53-45. The Broncos were outscored by a 21-8 margin in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats held a 56-49 advantage in rebounds, 36-26 in points in the paint, and 25-0 in bench points. Delhi shot 31.5 percent (23-for-73) and 3-for-20 from long range, while the Wildcats managed 36.0 percent (27-for-75) and 6-of-23, respectively. Caz also made 14-of-25 free throws as the Broncos made 4-of-9.
Head coach Courtney Hoyt's team, looking to end a five-game skid, have two more games before closing out the season. The ladies will play at ACAA-opponent Alfred State this Saturday, followed by hosting College of St. Joseph the following Saturday, Feb. 16.
