NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (January 11, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team mounted high-scoring second and third quarters on Friday at College of New Rochelle that led an eight-point lead with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Broncos, however, would make just one field goal down the stretch as the Blue Angels closed out the game on a 15-2 run that resulted in an 81-76 defeat. Delhi moved to 9-6 on the season.

The Broncos suffered through a slow start in the first quarter, and found themselves behind, 24-13, at period's end. The women responded by posting 25 points apiece in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Blue Angels in that stretch, 50-31, to take a 63-55 lead entering the fourth. Delhi kept things going to start the final fray, with a Malorie Rutledge 3-pointer giving them a 74-66 lead with 4:51 remaining. But over the next minute, CNR quickly struck with seven straight points, making back-to-back threes. The latter served as a four-point play when Melissa Perez was fouled on her triple that allowed her to make one from the free throw line to cut the Broncos' lead to 74-73 with 3:54 to go.

On a night where the Broncos made 6-of-23 threes to CNR's 9-of-33, the Blue Angels made five of theirs in the fourth quarter, while Delhi made one. The Blue Angels had already made three following the four-point play, and quickly hit another to give them a two-point lead at 76-74 with 2:18 to play. Sam Acuna made what would Delhi's final field goal of the night to tie the game on the ensuing possession, but New Rochelle answered with their final three of the night to take the lead for good at 79-76 with 1:46 left. Though the Broncos defense held down the Blue Angels on subsequent possessions, Delhi was unable to connect on game-tying opportunities. Two CNR free throws following intentional fouls made up the final points.

Delhi finished at 42.5 percent from the field, going 31-for-73, while the Blue Angels made 34.7 percent, making 34 out of a staggering 98 attempts. The Broncos were outrebounded, 55-52, including a 20-8 deficit on offensive boards that led to a 22-9 CNR advantage in second-chance points. Delhi was forced into 16 turnovers, which led to the Blue Angels holding a 26-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Samiaya Salley logged her eighth 20-point game of the season with 28 points, along with eight rebounds and five assists. Acuna picked up her second straight double-double of the year with 14 points and ten rebounds, while Kiera Holland netted 19 points with four boards and seven assists. Diana Echols collected eight points with 17 rebounds.

Head coach Courtney Hoyt's squad returns to ACAA competition for their next two contests. Currently 2-0 in the conference, the ladies travel to face Pine Manor on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 5:00 p.m., and then will welcome Alfred State on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
