CANTON, N.Y. (January 23, 2018) – With a game-tying SUNY Canton layup with 7.4 seconds remaining to knot the score at 67-67, it appeared the Broncos and Roos would settle the score in overtime. But Delhi's leading scorer Samiaya Salley had different plans, banking in a running floater with 0.3 to play to give the Broncos a thrilling 69-67 win.
Head coach Vicki Andruszkiewicz's team now stands at 13-8, with last week's USCAA Division II Coaches' Rankings slotting them at number nine. The Broncos have eight more games to stake their claim for the USCAA National Tournament at Penn State Fayette, with their next contest at Morrisville State on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The USCAA tournament will field eight teams, with Delhi eligible for one of the four at-large bids.
Salley scored 20 of her game-high 26 points in the first half, connecting on just one field goal in the second half before her game-winner. She also had five rebounds and five assists. The sophomore, who notched her first 20-point performance in four games, boosted her career points total to 892, bringing her closer to the 1,000-point milestone. Only Jennifer LePinnet-Clark (2002-04) has ever reached the feat at SUNY Delhi, doing so in two years. Salley now has 14 20-point games for the year, including three 30-point games.
In a game that featured five ties and eight lead changes, Delhi jumped out to an early 15-3 lead halfway through the first quarter. Canton eventually worked its way back into the game, and slipped into halftime with a 42-38 lead. The Broncos and Roos played to a third-quarter power struggle, and with Canton ahead, 63-57, with 8:12 left in the fourth, Delhi went on a 9-0 run to take back the lead at 66-63 with 3:51 remaining. After a Roos layup to trim their lead to one, Katie Herba, who put the Broncos ahead just minutes earlier, split a pair of free throws with 18 ticks to play, where Taylor Saltus answered for Canton with the equalizer with 7.4 remaining. After a Delhi timeout, Salley fielded the inbounds from Kiera Holland, working her way from right to left and baking in a one-handed floater on the run from outside the paint to finish off the Broncos win.
Camryn McDonald collected her 15th double-double of the year with ten points and ten rebounds, while Holland ranked second for Delhi with 14 points, making 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Herba netted 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Erica Cornmire's four points on the night came courtesy of a pair of crucial jumpers in the fourth quarter, with the latter giving Delhi the 66-63 lead.
The Broncos made 43.1 percent of their shots (28-for-65) compared to the Roos' 37.2 percent (29-for-78). Delhi shot 9-for-21 from behind the arc and 4-for-6 from the free throw line while Canton fared 7-for-25 and 2-of-8, respectively.
