Starting Five Connect for Double Digits in Offensive Win over Villa Maria

DELHI, N.Y. (November 10, 2017) – Trailing by as much as 16 points in the second half, and facing a 41-33 halftime deficit, the SUNY Delhi women's basketball team generated 56 second-half points on their way to an 89-85 win over Villa Maria Friday evening. The Broncos are off to the best start under head coach Vicki Andruszkiewicz with a 4-0 record, with Friday's win chalking up the team's first NIAC victory of the season.

In a high-scoring contest, all five of Delhi's starters scored in double digits. Camryn McDonald tallied her fourth straight double-double with a team-best 20 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Samiaya Salley had 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while Kiera Holland, who was held scoreless in the first half, rattled in 16 points in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter. Sam Acuna 16 points, while Katie Herba, in her first start of 2017-18, had 14 markers and led the team with 13 rebounds.

The Broncos were dealt with the task Friday to overcome a pair of 20-points performances by Vikings Shaquana Owens and Bianca Brown. Owens had 23 points, with nine rebounds and assists, while Brown had 20 points with 11 boards. Reserves Leah McQuiller and Tekia Gary also had double-digits for the Vikings, with 14 points for McQuiller and 11 from Gary.

Delhi trailed just 22-21 after the first quarter, but netted only 12 points to fall behind by eight at the half. The Broncos came out of the gate and tied the game at 44-44 just before the halfway point of the third quarter. They jumped ahead on a Salley 3-pointer at 49-47 with 4:43 to go in the third. With the exception of a brief 65-64 Vikings lead on an early fourth-quarter layup by Brown, Delhi maintained a lead the rest of the way. Ahead, 87-85, The Broncos staved off a late threat when a Davis layup with 18 seconds left missed its mark and led to McDonald being fouled and nailing two clutch free throws to put the game out of reach.

Villa Maria shot 36.2 percent for the game, making 34 of a whopping 94 attempts, while Delhi shot 44.2 percent, making 34-of-77. The Broncos made 6-of-22 3-pointers, while the Vikings made 11-of-32 from behind the arc. At the line, Delhi connected on 15-of-26 free throws to Villa's 6-of-9. Villa Maria held a slim 57-51 lead in rebounds, with the Broncos coming through, 38-36, on points in the paint and 14-12 in second-chance points.
