ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Jack Flood '15

DELHI, N.Y. (March 21, 2019) – Head coach Robb Munro and his SUNY Delhi track and field team enjoyed a spectacular first indoor season in NCAA Division III, with ten Broncos qualifying for their first All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships and two earning podium finishes. Munro's team is set to begin their outdoor season this Saturday down in Maryland for the Goucher College Classic. They have 11 meets on their outdoor slate, including the NAC/GNAC/NECC Championships and the AARTFC Championships.

Coach Munro is not only proud of his team's recent accomplishments, but also had reason to celebrate by watching one of his former student-athletes thrive on the national stage. 2015 SUNY Delhi alumnus and multi competitor Jack Flood finished third in the heptathlon at the 2019 Toyota USA Track & Field Indoor Championships. The competition took place Feb. 22-24 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island, NY. He finished with 5,701 points, placing behind winner Tim Ehrhardt (5,868 points), a former All-American at Michigan State, and runner-up Solomon Simmons (5,766 points), a former All-American at Eastern Michigan.

Flood competed for the Broncos from 2013 to 2015, and still holds the indoor heptathlon school record with 4,789 points and the outdoor decathlon all-time mark with 6,339 points. He was a two-time NJCAA national champion in the decathlon both seasons at Delhi, and set the NJCAA Division III Championship meet record as a sophomore with 6,206 points. That year also saw the native of Blue Point, NY earn Second-Team All-American honors in the 110-meter hurdles. His performances guided Delhi to a runner-up national finish in 2014 and a national title in 2015. After earning his Associate's in Physical Education, Flood moved on to SUNY Cortland, where he became a NCAA Division III indoor national champion in the heptathlon, setting both the school and SUNYAC record with 5,247 points as a senior.

From Robb Munro:

"When Jack first arrived at Delhi, he was a great athlete, but there were many events in the decathlon that he had never done before such as the pole vault, discus and javelin. He also had great room for improvement in other events, but especially the long jump and the high jump. Over the two years he was here, and since leaving, he has made huge strides in all the events. To anyone that knows him, this is no surprise because he has worked hard to earn every bit of it.

As a teammate, Jack was a key piece in the revived dominance of the Delhi Track and Field program.  As a freshman, he helped the team to a bittersweet runner-up finish, only seven points from winning.  When he returned as a sophomore, he was much more confident and really held a high standard, not only for himself, but his teammates as well. That attitude started in the fall and resulted in the team setting NJCAA Division III meet records in three events, the team scoring record and the record for winning margin. Jack's leadership and performance played a huge role in those wins and the transformation of attitudes and work ethic from many other athletes.

As a coach, you want your athletes to excel, but above all you want to see them develop a passion that can last a lifetime and bring them continued satisfaction. To see Jack continue to train and compete after college and pursue excellence in his discipline, which is the most demanding in the sport of track and field is so gratifying!"

Among the seven events in the heptathlon at the USATF Championship, Flood had the best score in the 60-meter hurdles at 962 points (8.08 seconds), was second in the shot put with 720 points (13.86 meters/45' 5.75"), and tied for second in the high jump (2.08 meters/6' 9.75"). Flood also scored between 771-799 points in each of the other four events with times of 7.24 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 2:48.55 in the 1,000 meters, a height of 4.60 meters (15' 1") in the pole vault, and a distance of 6.82 meters (22' 4.5") in the long jump.
