LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (April 11, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi softball team met SUNY Canton at the Homerun Softball Complex Thursday to split the first of a two-day series. A four-run sixth inning pitted the Broncos to a 9-5 defeat in the first game, but bounced back in game two with a 5-2 win. Delhi, now 6-6, will continue on its travels to Canton tomorrow to play the Roos for the final two games, beginning at 1:00 p.m., before heading down to Valley Forge on Saturday for an ACAA twin bill, starting at 1:30 p.m.

CANTON 9, DELHI 5

The lead changed hands several times over the contest. With Canton ahead, 3-0, after two innings, Delhi countered with one run in the third, three in the fourth, and one more in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, with three of those runs coming off RBI doubles from Yesileidy Paulino, Natasha Picozzi and Samantha Mendelsohn. The Roos jumped back in to tie the game with two runs in the fifth, then capturing control of the game with four runs in the sixth. Jordan Knapp led off the sixth frame with a go-ahead solo shot, and after another run came across, Jaedyn Ossont hit a two-RBI double for good measure.

All but two Broncos were held to as many as one hit in the game, with the exceptions being Dakota Baker batting 3-for-4 and Haylee Lefebvre going 2-for-3. Lefebvre pitched all six innings, giving up six earned runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Picozzi was 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and one RBI. Mendelsohn and Paulino both batted 1-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

DELHI 5, CANTON 2

Pitcher Molly Greene kept the Roos bats all but silent in the nightcap, allowing no earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. While the Broncos' offense was harnessed even tighter with five hits, they made the most of their plate appearances. Sierra Keesler thrusted the Broncos ahead in the third with a two-run home run for her fifth of the season. Though Canton would get one back in the bottom half, Greene stymied the opposition for three more frames, while Delhi cushioned its lead with three runs in the sixth. Haylee Lefebvre walked in a run with the bases loaded, while a Canton throwing error allowed two more Broncos runs to score. The Roos would get one back in the seventh, but nothing more.
