Delhi Takes Two in NAC over Weekend Home Tri-Match

DELHI, N.Y. (April 7, 2019) – SUNY Delhi men's tennis completed a three-match weekend home stand, taking two NAC wins in the process. After falling to a talented FDU Florham squad, 8-1, on Friday, Delhi bounced back for an 8-1 conference victory over NVU Johnson on Saturday and a 6-1 triumph versus NVU Lyndon.

The men are now 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the NAC, with two more regular-season contests to go. Following a ten-day gap to coincide with spring break, Delhi will host Utica on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. before hitting the road one last time for a NAC meeting with MCLA on Thursday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m.

DELHI 8, FDU FLORHAM 1

Though the Broncos faced tough competition from the Devils, the three doubles team of Brody Rettle and Michael Zerniak provided a major highlight in Delhi's lone win. Trailing, 6-0, versus Brendon Urbano and CJ Milano, Rettle and Zerniak reeled off eight consecutive points for an 8-6 victory. FDU Florham took the remaining two doubles matches by 8-0 scores and earned the singles competition in straight sets.

DELHI 8, NVU JOHNSON 1

Delhi opened the contest with a sweep in the doubles contests. The one team of Marcos Andrino and Payton Dean pulled through, 8-3, while Christopher Balogh and Michael Zerniak took the two match, 8-2. The three tandem of Bailey Lane and Jake Robinson captured their match by an 8-5 score.

Three of the singles matches were decided in three sets, with the Broncos winning two of them. Zerniak pulled out a marathon victory at four. After dropping the first set to Trevor Newton, 6-2, he then took the second frame, 6-1. The sophomore then endured an extended tiebreaker set, eventually coming out on top by a 15-13 score. Bababukunmi Babalola provided the other three-set heroics. He won set one over Donell Shaw, 6-2, but fell in the second set by the same score. Babalola prevailed, 10-6, in the third game. Christopher Balogh won two singles, 6-2 and 6-1, while Payton Dean won the three match, 6-0 and 6-2 and Jake Robinson at five, 6-1 and 6-2.

DELHI 6, NVU LYNDON 1

With a doubles and singles match forfeited by the Hornets, the Broncos took six of seven, including the two doubles matches. Marcos Andrino and Payton Dean took the one spot, 8-3, while Jake Robinson and Christopher Balogh earned a dub at two, 8-4.

Andrino went on to get a three-set win at one singles, 6-3, 3-6 and 10-4. Bailey Lane took shutout wins in the five spot, 6-0 and 6-0, while Zerniak grabbed a shutout on his way to a four win, 6-0 and 6-1. Payton Dean captured the three match by 6-4 and 6-2 scores.
