Lane, Lundstrom Win Singles in Midweek Defeat at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (April 4, 2019) – The SUNY Delhi men's tennis team hit the halfway point of their regular season on Wednesday with a road date at Utica. In the first of a two-match regular season series between the two teams, the Pioneers swept doubles and grabbed four singles matches to take the afternoon affair by a 7-2 score. The Broncos stand at 2-4 on the season.

Delhi's three doubles team of Brody Rettle and Michael Zerniak came the closest for the Broncos in the doubles competition, falling to Matt Zbytniewski / Anthony Coppola by an 8-3 decision. Utica took an 8-0 win in the two spot and an 8-2 victory at one.

Bailey Lane earned Delhi's first win at six singles, as the freshman downed Garrett Bortiatynski in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4. Top singles player Laif Lundstrom played to a three-set victory over LJ Nuzzo, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Zerniak went three sets with Ethan Trembley at four, answering from a 6-2 first-set defeat to win set two, 7-5, but fell in the deciding set, 10-6.

Delhi will host Utica to close out the regular-season series on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. Before then, head coach Brian Mitko's team has one day of rest before playing host to three matches in three days this weekend. It all starts Friday when Delhi plays FDU Florham at 3:00 p.m. The Broncos will then welcome NAC opponents Northern Vermont Johnson Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Northern Vermont Lyndon Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
