Men's Tennis Falls to Thomas, Sage in Weekend Slate

DELHI, N.Y. (March 31, 2019) – SUNY Delhi's men's tennis wrapped up their third weekend of competition, traveling to play Thomas in their NAC opener on Saturday and hosting Sage Sunday. The Broncos fell to the Terriors by a 9-0 score and were edged out in a tight 6-3 home battle versus the Gators. Delhi stands at 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

The Broncos now prepare for a four-match week, starting at Utica on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., followed by a three-match weekend home stand. Delhi hosts FDU Florham on Friday at 3:00 p.m., followed by two conference matches in Northern Vermont Johnson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Northern Vermont Lyndon Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

THOMAS 9, DELHI 0

The host Terriers took one and two doubles by matching 8-2 scores, and captured three doubles, 8-1. The Broncos then suffered all straight-set defeats in the singles competition, including shutouts at one, two, four and six. After a 6-1 defeat in the first set, Marcos Andrino gave Jared Waterhouse a challenge at three singles in the second set, but fell by a 6-3 score. Jake Robinson battled Christo Naranja in the fifth spot, ending up on the short end of 6-2 and 6-1 defeats.

SAGE 6, DELHI 3

Two doubles matches were decided by three points or less. Two singles matches were decided in three sets, while two others had sets determined in seven-point tiebreakers. Delhi, unfortunately, won only one of these matches. The Gators swept doubles, with the Broncos one tandem of Marcos Andrino and Laif Lundstrom falling, 8-6, to Henry Golden and Tyler Schnaible, with the match at one point tied, 6-6. The three team of Brody Rettle and Michael Zerniak dropped an 8-5 matchup with Ryan Burke Logan Fournia. The second group of Bailey Lane and Jake Robinson were taken down, 8-2, by Christian Rosario and Mitesh Joshi.

Andrino looked to keep Delhi in the match, finishing his three-singles match first with matching 6-4 wins over Rosario, but the Gators grabbed the next two matches to clinch the contest. Five singles was next to finish, with Michael Zerniak falling to Sage's Mitesh Joshi 7-6 (5) and 6-2. After a 6-2 win in his opening four-singles set, Payton Dean fell to Fournia following 6-4 and 7-5 defeats the latter two games. Jake Robinson earned a three-set win in the sixth spot over Ryan Burke by 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3 scores. Laif Lundstrom won in the top spot against Henry Golden, 6-3 and 6-2, while Christopher Balogh dropped his two-singles match with Schnaible, 6-4 and 7-6 (3).
