JOHNSON, Vt. (September 14, 2019) – The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) era for the SUNY Delhi men's soccer began on a winning note Saturday with a 3-2 win in their NAC season opener at Northern Vermont Johnson. The Broncos and host Badgers started with a bang, exchanging a pair of goals for a 2-2 tie just 15 minutes into the game. Things stayed quiet until Brody Rettle came through for the men with the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to give Delhi its third straight victory and first road win of 2019 to stand at 3-3 on the year.  

The Broncos struck first in sudden fashion, with Juan Velez getting the Broncos on the board just 34 seconds in. Johnson countered also quite quick with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead, the first coming off the foot of Tristan Santiago at the 3:06 mark, followed by Daniel Arriola putting the hosts out in front at 8:30. The fast scoring trend continued once more when John Cabrera gave the Broncos the equalizer to knot things up at 2-2 at 14:58.

Both defenses took the focus thereafter, settling in to keep the match gridlocked. The Broncos held the Badgers to seven shots, including four on goal, with goalkeeper Corey O'Toole totaling a pair of saves. Johnson answered by holding Delhi to nine shots. But it would be that ninth that made all the difference when Brody Rettle buried one off a feed from Darion Arango at 81:33.

Saturday's victory gives the Broncos an important boost to begin their NAC competition. Head coach Brian Mitko's team began the year at 0-3 following three road matches against formidable competition in SUNY Potsdam, Utica and Clarks Summit. Delhi got on track with home wins over Albany College of Pharmacy, 2-1, on Sept. 7 and Bard, 3-1, on Tuesday.

The Broncos look to keep their winning trend going when they continue their NAC season hosting Maine Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m.
