SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 7, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi men's soccer team found their fifth straight victory on Sunday at SUNY ESF in a 4-3 shootout with the Mighty Oaks. While the Broncos took a 3-0 first-half lead, ESF responded to cut Delhi's lead to one on two occasions. Thanks to nine saves from freshman goalie Gabriel Rodrigues and an insurance goal in the second half by Stefan Correia, head coach Brian Mitko's team improved to 8-2. The Broncos were ranked third in the latest USCAA Division II Coaches Poll, while the Mighty Oaks were ranked seventh and are now 4-5.

Brody Rettle was quick to put Delhi on the board, as the sophomore received a pass from Alhasane Sako to score at the two-minute mark for the 1-0 lead. With a penalty kick at the 16-minute mark, Sako boosted Delhi's lead to two. Late in the first half, freshman Carlos Del Monte tapped in a feed from Michael Zerniak to put the Broncos ahead by three in the 41st minute. SUNY ESF got its first score a minute later off a penalty kick to cut Delhi's lead to two at intermission.

The Mighty Oaks opened the second half scoring in the 53rd minute to close in on Delhi at 3-2. The Broncos, however, quickly stalled the home team's momentum when Correia provided what would be the team's final goal of the day, burying in a score with help from Matthew Cassidy in the 55th minute. SUNY ESF got one back in the 86th minute, but proved to be too late to spur a late rally.

Sako improved his team-leading scoring total to 23 points on ten goals and three assists, while Rettle's goal upped his total to 18 points on seven goals and four assists, ranking second on Delhi. Del Monte leads the Broncos freshmen with ten points on four goals and two assists, as fellow newcomer Rodrigues improved to 2-1 on the year in goal.

Coach Mitko's squad has a week ahead of them to prepare for their next contest, hosting Valley Forge in their ACAA regular season finale on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
