Top Scorers Carry Men's Soccer to 2-1 Win at ACPHS

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 4, 2018) — Goals from the SUNY Delhi men's soccer team's top two scorers lifted the Broncos to a 2-1 win at Albany College of Pharmacy Thursday night. Alhasane Sako gave the Broncos a 1-0 halftime lead, and after the Panthers scored in the second half, Brody Rettle answered five minutes later with the game-winner to catapult Delhi to their fourth straight win and a 7-2 mark on the year.

Head coach Brian Mitko's team was ranked third in the latest USCAA Division II Coaches Poll, with ACPHS ranked seventh. Thursday's triumph marked the team's first matchup and win this season over a ranked USCAA opponent.

Scoreless tension mounted for the first half hour of the game before Sako delivered his team-best ninth goal of the season in the 33rd minute, assisted by Juan Velez, to give Delhi the 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Marcos Andrino and the defense kept ACPHS off the board until the 71st minute, when Noah Keith provided an equalizer in hopes of dashing the Broncos' momentum. That would be short-lived, though, as Rettle teamed up with Sako and Jostin Sarmiento at the 75:59 mark for the sophomore's sixth goal of the year and the third straight match where he has scored the deciding score. Andrino and company kept up the pressure to stave off any chances of the Panthers tying the match.

Sako notched his scoring totals to 20 points, where he now leads the ACAA in points and goals. Thursday marked Rettle's fourth straight game with a goal, boosting his total to 16 points and ranking fourth in the conference in both points and goals. Andrino logged three saves to jump to 6-1 for his senior campaign. Delhi finished with an 18-11 lead in shots, with four corner kicks to the Panthers' three.

Coach Mitko's squad travels to Syracuse this Sunday for another meeting with a ranked USCAA foe in SUNY ESF at 3:00 p.m. The Mighty Oaks were tied with ACPHS at seventh in the national rankings this week.
