DELHI, N.Y. (September 3, 2018) – While the SUNY Delhi men's soccer team had a lot to celebrate prior to their home opener versus Alfred State Sunday, as it was their first official home NCAA contest, the Broncos took advantage of the occasion to post their second straight six-goal game in a 6-3 win over the Pioneers. Delhi is off to its first 2-0 start since 2016, and first under second-year head coach Brian Mitko.

Prior to the match, SUNY Delhi President Michael Laliberte, Vice President for Student Life Tomas Aguirre and Director of Athletics Bob Backus joined the men's and women's soccer teams in a ceremonial ribbon cutting to celebrate the Broncos' first official home contests as NCAA Division III members. As of Saturday, the institution began its first year of its NCAA provisional membership after a successful exploratory year during the 2017-18 academic year.

Alhasane Sako, who scored two goals in the Broncos' season-opening victory at Pratt, kept with tradition and scored a pair to lead off Delhi's scoring attack Sunday. The junior forward gave Delhi an early 1-0 lead at the five-minute mark, assisted by John Cabrera. After a Pioneers equalizer materialized in minute 14, Sako put the Broncos ahead just before halftime when he earned a feed from Carlos Del Monte and delivered a scoring strike at the 43-minute ledger to take a 2-1 advantage into intermission.

Del Monte gave Delhi some breathing room when the freshman ripped his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute for a 3-1 Broncos lead. An own goal a minute later, however, quickly put the Broncos back ahead by just one goal. But Juan Velez and Brody Rettle came to Delhi's aid by combining for three unanswered goals in a span of eight minutes. Velez scored off an assist from Del Monte in minute 66, followed by a Rettle score in the 69th minute and Velez's second goal at the 73-minute mark. Alfred State scored one more before the match's conclusion.

Goalkeeper Marcos Andrino improved to 2-0 on the year, logging seven saves. Del Monte, Sako and Velez led all scorers on the day with four points; Sako and Velez each had two goals, while Del Monte had one goal and two assists. The Broncos outshot the Pioneers, 18-15, and had four corner-kick chances to Alfred State's one. The Delhi defense also registered a team save for eight total saves.

The Broncos are back on their home field Thursday for a home meeting with Clarks Summit, starting at 4:00 p.m.
